Publisher's summary

In 1882, a notorious outlaw and a childhood friend of Billy the Kid was released from prison where he had been serving time for killing a Texas Ranger. His freedom finally secured, the outlaw disappeared and was never heard from again. Never, that is, until 1948, when he came out of hiding after almost 70 years. In the course of proving his identity to a court of law, the outlaw revealed that his friend Billy the Kid was not killed by Pat Garrett but was still alive even to that day. After a period of research and persistence, the young lawyer was finally led to a destitute old man in Texas, who was named not William H. Bonney, but William H. Roberts, although Bonney had been an alias that he had used. Roberts agreed to reveal himself as Billy the Kid if the lawyer would help him obtain a pardon so he could die a free man. You see, the Kid was still wanted for murder, so to come forward was to risk being sentenced and put to death, but this was a risk that William H. Roberts was willing to take. He told his story only one time, to one man. This is his story, now presented for the first time with new evidence and research that supports his claim that he was the one true Billy the Kid of legend.

Finally a concise book of hard evidence.

People who want the truth outshine the charlatans of our faked history. Kudos to all, especially Billy!

Believe it!

This book made a believer out of me. There is no doubt, Pat Garrett did not kill Billy the Kid.

Good (true?) yarn.

Pleasantly surprised. Really good story, and Corbin did a fine job. True or not, I really enjoyed listening.

Very convincing!

Very convincing, fully referenced, and objective view of the data on this subject. I think it's more probable that Brushy Bill was Billy the Kid than not. Great book!

It’s 💯% Billy The Kid

Billy lived on. This book truly breaks it down. I believe Brushy Bill Robert’s story.

85% convinced

Book is great. Narration is slow but had great feeling. I had it at x1.30 most of the book. I've always enjoyed the story of Billy the Kid. I'm a history teacher and it's one of my subjects and stories of all time. I had never believed the Brushy Bill story. I've read Alias and was never convinced. I remain skeptical but all the extra work and research, the census stuff, all the William H. alias's and the backing of it has gotten me pretty convinced. At the very least I don't believe Pat Garrett killed Billy the Kid anymore. Billy lived on. Is Brushy Bill the same man? I'm 85% convinced he is. If he wasn't him, he was attached to his hip, and took on his identity whenever he actually died.

Billy/Brushy

Very well written, I love Barry's narration of the book, the research and photo comparisons got me convinced that Billy and Brushy are one and the same.
Shameful he didn't get his pardon

so informative and vety detail oriented!

it is clear to me this author, with a unbiased mindset diligently searched and uncovered all the factual evidence and documents and truly attempted only to bring to light all the available evidence surrounding this case. Wonderful job!
