About this listen

For fans of Unbroken, the remarkable, untold story of World War II American Air Force turret-gunner Staff Sergeant Arthur Meyerowitz, who was shot down over Nazi-occupied France and evaded Gestapo pursuers for more than six months before escaping to freedom.

Bronx-born top turret-gunner Arthur Meyerowitz was on his second mission when he was shot down in 1943. He was one of only two men on the B-24 Liberator known as Harmful Lil Armful who escaped death or immediate capture on the ground. After fleeing the wreck, Arthur knocked on the door of an isolated farmhouse, whose owners hastily took him in. Fortunately, his hosts not only despised the Nazis but had a tight connection to the French resistance group Morhange and its founder, Marcel Taillandier. Arthur and Taillandier formed an improbable bond as the resistance leader arranged for Arthur's transfers among safe houses in southern France, shielding him from the Gestapo.

Based on recently declassified material, exclusive personal interviews, and extensive research into the French Resistance, The Lost Airman tells the tense and riveting story of Arthur's trying months in Toulouse - masquerading as a deaf mute and working with a downed British pilot to evade the Nazis - and of his hair-raising journey to freedom involving a perilous trek over the Pyrenees and a voyage aboard a fishing boat with U-boats lurking below and Luftwaffe fighters looming above. This is a never-before-told true story of endurance, perseverance, and escape during World War II.

Fantastic book

The compelling story of a young soldier who bailed out of his B-24 over Nazi-occupied France, the audio performance was excellent and the story was compelling.

Interesting Story

I did not do my research on this book before I listed to it. I like true stories told by the people who lived them. This was written by a person who never even met the person the story is about. While a good story and I am sure they did there research I still like to here it from the person who lived it as only that person can say exactly how they felt and exactly what happened.

Good story

Doesn't completely grab you an pull you in like some books can. However it still ends up being a good story an it's based on real life events so it does paint a good picture for the circumstances.

Amazing story of perseverance and determination.

As with one of the other reviews, I found the execution of the read a little dry. That being said, what a great piece of history and a truly inspiring story. The determination of Art Meyerowtiz and the French people is so uplifting. Thank you Seth Meyerowitz for sharing this incredible story of history and your family.

Lost Airman- a must read!

As a WW2 buff and avid reader of WW2 novels this account is a must read, not just for WW2 historians but especially for this generation that has a faded sense of the heroism of “The Greatest Generation”. This novel ranks up there with the likes of “Unbroken” and I hope, in like fashion, someone will catch the vision to tell this story on the big screen.

Addictive

I was initially skeptical about how well this book would be written given that's it's told by his grandson, but the writing is excellent, the story immersive, the characters so real, and there are so many panic-inducing moments that kept me listening for hours.
If you liked Unbroken, or Darkest Hour, this one's a great addition to the collection!

the lost airman

true stories are hard to listen to but need to be told, if we don't learn from our past how do we make futures for our children better than our past. Great story.

Appreciation to our soldier's

thank you to Arthur and all the air men that fought courageously for our freedoms. I enjoyed the story, it made me think how lucky we are to have had such great men and women fight for our freedom. The sacrifices they endured only solidify my believe that without the United States the world would be a different place.

The greatest generation

This story really hit home. My late husband was also Jewish from Brooklyn and a turret gunner in 8th Air Force. He never crashed in enemy territory but survived 35 missions over Germany which statistically is rare. I listened to this exciting book and have ordered a hard cover for my son so he can get the feel of what these brave men endured.
