Resumen del Editor

Writing in the tradition of Dennis Lehane and Greg Iles, Attica Locke, a powerful new voice in American fiction, delivers a brilliant debut thriller that readers will not soon forget.

Porter is hardly the lawyer he set out to be. His most promising client is a low-rent call girl and he runs his fledgling law practice out of a dingy strip mall. But he's long since made peace with not living the American Dream and carefully tucked away his darkest sins: the guns, the FBI file, the trial that nearly destroyed him.

Houston, Texas, 1981. It is here that Jay believes he can make a fresh start. That is, until the night in a boat out on the bayou when he impulsively saves a woman from drowning - and opens a Pandora's box. Her secrets put Jay in danger, ensnaring him in a murder investigation that could cost him his practice, his family, and even his life. But before he can get to the bottom of a tangled mystery that reaches into the upper echelons of Houston's corporate power brokers, Jay must confront the demons of his past.

With pacing that captures the reader from the first scene through an exhilarating climax, Black Water Rising marks the arrival of an electrifying new talent.

Good One

Ms Like cake wrote such a heartfelt story of life de experiences in what most call the “free” USA. But is it really free for everyone or just the wealthy? Mr Graham did an excellent job narrating this work.

Lots of twists and turns

I enjoyed the twists and turns and the backstory of Jay and his willingness to figure out what the greater good is.

Is There an Abridged Version?

The only reason this book is getting three stars from me is because of the great narration by Dion Graham. If I'd been reading hard copy, I wouldn't have finished the book. It began with great promise and I was very excitied - good plot, great reader. Then the author went on long, boring, rambling accounts of political movements from back in the day, and labor union issues, and all sorts of other stuff that really didn't add anything to the plot and only marginally added to character development. At least half of this book could have been edited out. By three quarters in, I just wanted it to be OVER. And don't be fooled by the comparisons to Dennis Lehane and Greg Iles, two authors I love. Attica Locke is not even close.

interesting story

I really enjoyed the description of the racial struggles in Houston, and Texas in general. very interesting. At times I wondered how Jay could miss a certain angle and thought that 4he link between different story lines was uncessesarily convoluted. and I could not be more annoyed with the music at the end of each chapter. terrible idea.

Good story

The story of survivors of the civil rights movement must be told. This tale is more than a mystery. It is tells the reclamation of a man's dignity after tumult of life and the civil rights movement. I enjoyed this story very much.

Pleasant read, not earth shattering

Great characters, nice depiction of the realities of Houston. Its a bit slow in the middle and not as captivating as Locke's later novels, but ultimately it was a very pleasant listen.

An Impressive debut!

An interesting twist on a familiar story. Jay Porter's unique background and the backdrop of Houston all add to the feel of this story. Smart, believable dialogue and a varied cast of characters made this an easy listen.

Houston Crime Report n the 1980’s

Jay Porter is the “Easy Rawlins” of Houston, Texas, except he has a law degree. I enjoyed the story, the suspense, and the familiarity of all the locations since I’m a native Houstonian. Great read!
