Publisher's summary
From the #1 bestselling author of the Harry Bosch and the Lincoln Lawyer series and who "is the master of the universe in which he lives" (Huffington Post), comes the gripping novel that inspired the film starring Clint Eastwood.
When Graciella Rivers steps onto his boat, ex-FBI agent Terrell McCaleb has no idea he's about to come out of retirement. He's recuperating from a heart transplant and avoiding anything stressful. But when Graciella tells him the way her sister, Gloria, was murdered, Terry realizes he has no choice. Now the man with the new heart vows to take down a predator without a soul. For Gloria's killer shatters every rule that McCaleb ever learned in his years with the Bureau-as McCaleb gets no more second chances at life...and just one shot at the truth.

The messages waiting for Henry Pierce when he plugs in his new phone clearly aren't intended for him. They indicate something has gone terribly wrong for a woman named Lilly. Pierce probes, investigates, and then tumbles through a hole, leaving behind a life driven by work to track down and help a woman he's never met. Two women have gone missing, and LAPD detective Harry Bosch has a strong suspicion that an avid fisherman named Denninger is the culprit. Bosch needs something stronger than a suspicion to bring Denninger in, but all he has are a handful of photos - prior mug shots and pictures of Denninger posing with his prize fish. It's not much to go on, and Bosch is running out of time, which is why he calls in FBI agent Rachel Walling. What she sees in these photos could blow his case wide open.

My life was ordinary until three years ago when I was thrown out of a downtown hotel window. My name is Robbie Brownlaw, and I am a homicide detective for the city of San Diego. I am 29 years old. I now have synesthesia, a neurological condition where your senses get mixed up. Sometimes when people talk to me, I see their voices as colored shapes provoked by the emotions of the speakers, not by the words themselves. I have what amounts to a primitive lie detector.

narrator performance left me uninspired.
the narrators performance of the female character of graciella weak i could only conjure up a picture of a man in drag. other characters were done well.
the overall story was pretty good, even though I had the Noone character pegged from the beginning, my curiosity kept me listening because I wanted to see how it played out.
I still love Michael Connelly and the characters he creates.

Absolutely Remarkable (as always)
I came across the other novels in this series 1st and always wondered what I missed, then here it said ( Here's the only 2 novels of M.C that you don't have in your library) Boom!!! I have it this 1 now, and I am amazed at what the characters went through, I am always amazed at how he writes each character. I am re-reading his novels in anticipation of the Nov '22 release of Ballard's next novel in the series. I have time and will definitely be able to finished this series as a trucker, I have a long day ahead and great novels and storyline always keeps my left door shut. I definitely recommend this novel. You will LOVE it.
