Story
Vermont’s promising young governor, Andrew Kane, is at another public meet-and-greet when a stranger from the crowd slips him a cell phone and whispers, “Keep this with you...keep it secret...you’re going to need it after the arrest.” Hours later, Andrew’s brother, Tyler, is taken into custody - framed for the brutal murder of a young woman - and Andrew discovers there is only one way to free him: answer the mysterious phone and agree to a blackmailer’s demands. All the governor has to do to make it all go away is compromise everything he stands for and grant a full pardon to a convicted felon.

Two couples, four ironclad friendships, the perfect coastal holiday town. With salt-stung houses perched like lifeguards overlooking the shore, Lago Point is the scene of postcards, not crime scenes. One weekend, while Andrew Mason was on a fishing trip, his wife, Brie, vanished without a trace. Most everyone assumed Andy had got away with murder—it’s always the husband, isn’t it?—but the police could never build a strong case against him. Editorial reviews
With two words, a homeless man changes up-and-coming federal prosecutor Charlie Beckham’s life. He calls Charlie by a name that only Charlie and his older brother share, except Charlie's brother, an investigative journalist, disappeared thirteen years ago. Before Charlie can act, the homeless man disappears, and Charlie must begin a search that will lead him through the dark alleys of Boston's criminal underworld. Narrator John Rubinstein gives a vivid performance of this complex thriller, complementing the tense pacing of the story with his excellent comedic timing for its occasional moments of humor.
Publisher's summary
Charlie Beckham is a rising star among federal prosecutors until, on the morning of the most important court day of his career, a deranged homeless man turns Charlie's life upside with a single word. He calls Charlie by a secret nickname known by only one other person in the world - Charlie's brother Jake, who went missing thirteen years ago. Charlie has a hundred questions but the homeless man disappears before Charlie can ask a single one. So begins Charlie's search for answers, and for his brother, a search that leads him down Boston's darkest streets, into its blackest alleys, and, finally, into its criminal underworld. But if Charlie wants answers he'll have to get them from some of the most feared and ruthless people in the city.

Story
An attack in the dark. The loss of a love. Waking up hung over in a ditch. These are the things that make a hero, especially if that hero is Quincy Harker, immortal wizard, snarky bastard, and general badass. Histories collects two short stories and one short novella giving a peek behind the curtain at the man, the myth, the legend that is Quincy Harker, as well as the origin story of one of his most popular cohorts, Jo Henry.

Story
Carter's a homicide cop in Titanshade, an oil boomtown where 8-tracks are state of the art, disco rules the radio, and all the best sorcerers wear designer labels. It's also a metropolis teetering on the edge of disaster. As its oil reserves run dry, the city's future hangs on a possible investment from the reclusive amphibians known as Squibs. But now negotiations have been derailed by the horrific murder of a Squib diplomat. The pressure's never been higher to make a quick arrest, even as Carter's investigation leads him into conflict with the city's elite.

Story
The thing about ghosts is they’re supposed to stay dead. That’s exactly what I am, but I can’t stay away from Magnolia Marie Maison for one more day, let alone another year. We’ve already got 15 of those between us. As it stands, she’ll want to kill me as soon as she lays eyes on me. And knowing her, she’s completely up to the task. But I’m a man on a mission, and I’ve got everything riding on this. So, here I come, Magnolia. This ghost is ready for whatever you got. After all, there’s only one way I want this to end - ’til death do us part.

The ending is the best part
This story alternately entertained me and drove me crazy. The internal monologue was maddening at times--reiterating what the reader already knew. But the story itself was intriguing and fun with a wide variety of interesting characters. The end was worth the wait.

Entertaining
This book held my interest the whole way through. The only small complaint I have is that many things were repeated over and over again. If I had been reading the book, instead of listening to it, it probably would have frustrated me more than it did. I will definitely buy more of his books.

Enjoyable story performed even better
Enough twists to keep you guessing without focusing on the turns rather than the story.

what an author
OK so your reading reviews to see if your going to spend the money or credits you've heard earned, or maybe your day was/is rich and it wasn't so hard earned that's OK too, it's still your money and you want to know if Ryder books good. Well the story is a good one the author put allot of thought into it you won't be disappointed there. it's not really a detective story but it's not... not a detective story. the narrator simply cannot pull off a female voice but my his ability to change make voices is incredible. these characters became as close to real as possible I believe. it's a great buy that if your even remotely interested in a crime style bill I honestly think you'll enjoy.

Good Read (listen)
Good hero. Enjoyable personality. Would have liked the character - Jessica, to have been more active. The voice, and voices, of the reader were fresh and varied.
