About this listen

Remember the Monster Stick? The greatest and most dangerous fishing-rod ever? What about Buck, who simply "ain't no ordinary dog"? Anyone who has seen the Lepp boys perform or read their book The Monster Stick will never forget them. In this recording, we revisit West Virginia with Bil Lepp as he tells some of the stories that made his brother, Paul, and himself repeat winners of the West Virginia State Liars Contest.

In an age when "tall tales" are thought of as an ancient art form, these stories are right up to date. And Bil tells them with such deadpan sincerity that you just can't help but believe in things that aren't physically possible.

Editorial reviews

In this recording, Bill Lepp showcases the ability that has repeatedly won him the West Virginia State Liar's contest. From fishing trips gone awry to the real story of Jonah (who was actually swallowed by a giant carp), Lepp's tales are so tall they barely fit in the room. Yet there is something disarming about his lively and affable way of relating events, so that you're lulled into suspending disbelief as you go along with him on these wild rides. Children and adults alike will be laughing out loud at some of the scrapes Lepp gets into, though some of his asides ("faster than an intern leaving the Oval Office") will, mercifully, travel over the heads of children.

Road trip entertainment

Good chortling, snorting, guffawing stories. Great for bonding during long road trips. currently looking for more.

Tall Tales at their finest!

What did you love best about Buck Meets the Monster Stick?

Bil Lepp came to our school and did a performance. He kept jr. high students in the palm of his hand - an amazing feat, I assure you. Listening to this brought back the wonderful memories of an incredible storyteller who knows how to time a laugh and how to deliver a line.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Buck Meets the Monster Stick?

Meeting the Buck dog. Mr. Lepp told our students he is real, although some of the events the dog was involved in may have been exaggerated.

Have you listened to any of Bil Lepp’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, and this compares well. Bil Lepp is just a good storyteller. I loved his vocabulary and timing. That's a gift not every storyteller is blessed to have.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Knowing that Bil's older brother died young (36 yrs. old), I really like the story of using the monster stick for one last time. I thought it a fitting tribute.

This might be a good but not for me

Is there anything you would change about this book?

My grandson stays over every Thursday and being in a hurry I bought this book thinking it was about a dog or puppy.

I do think Bil Lepp had the perfect voice for the part and made me feel like I was there; more down south and it was fun but not what I would listen too for myself.

Would you ever listen to anything by Bil Lepp again?

I would not listen to bil again because I either have books for the grandchildren or more serious books that I don’t have time to read but can listen.

What three words best describe Bil Lepp’s voice?

Good old boy

Could you see Buck Meets the Monster Stick being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

no
