    The power of appreciation!

This is a great book. It will increase your people skills and teach you to appreciate and be interested in other people. I have read other people skills books and found this one to be the most authentic. I do not want to be "fake" when dealing with people and this book does not teach you to be a flattering liar like some other books I have read. It was what I was looking for to improve my people skills.

A guide book for dealing with people

I remember back in the 1950's the seminars held by Carnegie, they were very popular. I saw the book off and on over the years and thought to myself I should read this, then I saw it on the Audible list and said okay now is the time. I am glad I did. Most of the book is common sense but stated in an easy acceptable manner, the examples given demonstrate each point and make it more enjoyable and understandable. The book was written in 1936 and examples of what was current events or people at the time the book was written is history today which I enjoyed. I saw in myself some bad habits I should correct to become a better listener. Overall this is a enjoyable self help book, I wished I had read it years ago. I noted most of the information is aimed at sales people, but everyone that interacts with people can benefit.

How to Win Friends & Influence People

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was delighted that the analysis of human nature is relevant today as in the time it was written. Everyone can learn from this book.

Still valid after all these years

You'll learn a lot from this book - namely how to deal with people with integrity. The first part of the book explains how to get people to like you, and it's not hokey or fake. It's a matter of speaking in a way that engages others and listening to other people's points of view. The second part teaches you how to make sales or persuade people to your way of thinking. The only downside of this book is that all the examples are from the first half of last century, but the information is still valid and can be put into practice immediately.

The power of appreciation and more through stories

This is a well written book and the narator does a very good job reading it. This is such a powerful book because it cover basic concepts with exceptional stories ranging from ancient stories to Carnegie's contemporary stories. There are stories about Abe Lincoln (along with other Presidents) and young Stevie Wonder and Queen Victoria and average everyday people. He includes stories from the battle field to the board room to the classroom. Carnegie distingishes between appreciation and flattery. Some of the stories are told in the words to originator (often student's in classes either taught by Carnegie or his associates). It's a great book about interpersonal relations. Having trouble with someon? Don't criticize them, appreciate them. Honest sincere appreciation. I really like the baiting-the-hook-to-suit-the-fish concept. Fishe don't like strawberries and creme, so don't go fishing with what the fish don't want, no matter how much you would like it. I liked this so much, I want to by the print version

Very practical and informative. A must read

after listening to this audiobook half way through, I was already able to practice and see great results with what was being taught. I got my supervisor to open up and talk to me after a dry spell got someone abrasive to relent and learned more about those around me than before. This is a must read for anyone

Very Good! (Better 50 Years Ago, Though...)

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would recommend this book/audiobook to a friend. There is a lot of useful information about psychology and interpersonal communication.

What did you like best about this story?

What I liked best about the story were the nuggets of useful information.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from How to Win Friends & Influence People?

Everyone could use these principles to become better communicators and better listeners. For me, the lesson(s) I could apply immediately - and be much better off - are the one's that encourage the reader/listener to take better care in remembering a person's name ("a person's name is the sweetest sound to them") and the notion that if someone is wrong - even if you know them to be wrong - do not call them on it; you will make them defensive and you will get nothing out of it.

    Any additional comments?

Carnegie's wisdom and research were easy to understand and follow through his conversational style and very readable anecdotes. And he provides MANY anecdotes; I would argue TOO many. Don't misunderstand me, there is a reason that this book has been in print for nearly 80 years, has sold more than 15 million copies and has been translated into 20 languages. He provides precepts and supports them with tutorials AND anecdotes. And all of the information is for the sole purpose of helping you become the best you that you can be. It was the quintessential "self-help book" for decades.

There was a lot of information that felt a little too dated to me. There were numerous stories about how these methods helped traveling salesmen and such. The anecdotes were also very rooted in traditional gender roles: the men were primarily heads of companies and executives; the women were bank tellers and housewives. I think I am going to try "How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age" next, to see how the Carnegie Institute incorporates Mr. Carnegie's ideas in the 21st Century.

The psychology is very sound but I think providing the ideas along with some background, followed by AN anecdote would make the book more engaging than supporting each point with gratuitous testimonials.

One last thought: It feels to me that Carnegie disobeys one of his own rules when he talks so much of how his system will work to change lives. But that may just be me. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to a friend.
