Publisher's summary

Despite all the high-tech tools available to salespeople, the most personal method still works best.

Storytelling packs the emotional punch to turn routine presentations into productive relationships. It explains products or services in ways that resonate; it connects people and creates momentum. Stories speak to the part of the brain where decisions are made.

Paul Smith, author of the acclaimed Lead with a Story, shifts his best-selling formula to the sales arena. In Sell with a Story, he identifies the ingredients of the most effective sales stories and reveals how to:

  • Select the right story
  • Craft a compelling and memorable narrative
  • Incorporate challenge, conflict, and resolution
  • Use stories to introduce yourself, build rapport, address objections, add value, bring data to life, create a sense of urgency, and more

Complete with model stories, skill-building exercises, and enlightening examples from Microsoft, Costco, Xerox, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hewlett Packard, and other top companies, this powerful and practical guide gives you the tools you need to turn your experiences into stories that sell.

Very balanced and motivated book

I was a little skeptical going into this book. I've read information before that seemed to suggest replacing sales process with storytelling. I think that's simply not a good idea. This author, explicitly, states that should not be done. Rather, he shows how to augment a sales process with storytelling. And he does it very well. I highly recommend!

An incredible tool

Just like an axe can be used to cut wood for a family to keep warm, and an axe could be used to chop a persons head off, stories can be used for good and bad. Choose your side and tell stories. Paul Smith is a compelling narrator and he made learning this very simple.

Insightful, yet particular

It's one of those books, that you have to be in the correct mood or mindset otherwise you might zone out. The book is full specific examples of breaking down a sentence. Which is great if you have the written book not so easy to follow, when listening too.
That being said it's still a very good book, that offers various ways for anyone looking to become a better speaker/salesperson, to try a frame their stories in a better light.

Overall: good book worth the money, to get the most out of it though buy the briny as well.

This is definitely in my top 10 favorite books now

I think the most important portion of this entire book lies in the last five minutes where all of the other books on this topic are listed. The narration was perfect. The content was exactly what I expected and needed. I recommend this book highly.

Girlfriend did not zone off from my story

Yesterday, after so many years, I was finally able to get my girlfriend listening to me rambling about my business with full attention and no zoning off.

I only realise afterwards that this is the result of me unconsciously internalising the teaching of this book and structuring my word in a compelling story structure.

Comparing to the 5 other books & courses I brought on business storytelling. What I love about this book is that instead of spending most of the time fluffing about "Why storytelling is great", it jumps quickly into the "How to craft a great story for business" and explain in a very engaging and detail way.

The best thing about this book is that not only does it teaches a framework on how to craft a story and provided great examples. Paul also experiment live in the book with minor tweak to the example story, and this process is extremely eye opening. I was able to see how different small subtle changes can make or break the success of a business story.

And through the process of experimenting, he also explain the thought process behind each changes, and I think this is probably the best part about the book.

By exposing his thought process in such detail. I was able to internalise the knowledge into my head so easily. For the past few days, I notice myself starting to unconsciously craft my words around a compelling story structure. And I can already notice how people around me is more receptive to what I am saying.

My recommendation is, if you are someone who already knows the power of storytelling in the business, who just wants to skip the fluff and get down to learning the execution. This is the book for you.
