Publisher's summary

Andrew Wakefield reveals the inside story of the vaccine-autism connection, and his controversial research.

As Andrew Wakefield states in his prologue, “If autism does not affect your family now, it will. If something does not change - and change soon - this is almost a mathematical certainty. This book affects you also. It is not a parochial look at a trivial medical spat in the United Kingdom, but dispatches from the battlefront in a major confrontation - a struggle against compromise in medicine, corruption of science, and a real and present threat to children in the interests of policy and profit. It is a story of how ‘the system’ deals with dissent among its doctors and scientists.”

In the pursuit of possible links between childhood vaccines, intestinal inflammation, and neurologic injury in children, Wakefield lost his job in London’s Royal Free Hospital, his country of birth, his career, and his medical license. A recent General Medical Council ruling stated that he was “dishonest, irresponsible and showed callous disregard for the distress and pain of children.” Maligned by the medical establishment and mainstream media, Wakefield endeavors to set the record straight in Callous Disregard. While explaining what really happened, he calls out the organizations and individuals that are acting not for the sake of children affected by autism, but in their own self-interests.

Editorial reviews

Diagnoses of autism are rising. Why? Is some biological agent causing an actual uptick in autism?

In 1998, the respected medical journal The Lancet published a paper by Dr. Andrew Wakefield, a U.K.-based physician and researcher, that proposed a link between child vaccinations and autism. The paper ignited a major public fear of vaccinations and a hot scientific debate which ended with the disgrace and discrediting of Wakefield and his findings.

Callous Disregard, adeptly narrated by Gildart Jackson, is Wakefield’s attempt to uphold his original findings and clear his name. More than a discussion of vaccination and autism, Callous Disregard, is a look into the process of scientific discovery and the special interests that can get in the way.

Andrew Wakefield is a hero.

Anyone who has ever heard of Wakefield or the ‘Lancet 12’ MUST read this book. This book goes into great detail about the study and the trial by the GMC.

Difficult read, but necessary truth information

This book wasn't easy to keep interested in because of the technical and detailed, but necessary information about what really happened when Dr. Wakefield examined the association of intestinal disease and autism. He never said that the MMR vaccine caused autism, he only recorded parents' claims that they believed it triggered the on set of the disease. The findings of Dr. Wakefield that gut issues and autism coexist are a well documented fact today. He should be given credit for this important finding. The gut brain connection is real and we have this well respected gastroenterologist to thank.

Eye opening account re: Mmr / autism report

I enjoyed listening to Wakefields account of this issue. Addressing each false accusation got a little old but I understand why he addressed each one. Worth the read!

Very good read. I highly recommend it!

It is refreshing to hear details from the man accused of so much.
In this day when everyone has an opinion, listen to both sides of the story. Forming opinions based on hearsay and no research is not acceptable. Listen to his side, then research it for yourself.

A must read for anyone who has ever referenced “Andy Wakefield”

I love listening to science type books because it can be hard to read them on my own, however, this book may be helpful to have a physical copy as it was sometimes difficult to follow without a physical reference. I DO highly recommend that ANYONE who has ever used Andy Wakefield’s name to refute science and condemn certain acts to read this book. I guarantee that you do not know or have all the facts, and should you have access to them, in a book such as this, you might realize you’ve been duped.

The Truth Shall Set You Free

Although a bit difficult to understand at some points, it is the truth. Wakefield is innocent, regardless of the lies Brian Deer has put forth.

Setting the Record Straight

Anyone who has delved at all into the subject of vaccines has probably heard the name "Andrew Wakefield". The vaccine faithful generally have a pre-recorded message about how he and his clinical team did this or that and were charged with such and such. In "Callous Disregard", the fraud, lies, false testimony of this case is all brought to light; not on the part of Wakefield and his team but on the part of those who brought complaints and those who testified about supposed conflicts of interest or unapproved research. Every charge is addressed and every false claim is dealt with in detail so there's no question regarding the actual events surrounding this case. Anyone interested in truth should definitely make this book a part of their knowledge base.
