About this listen
1940: Austrian refugee Karl Lang has lost everything—his country, his home, and his family. All that is left to him is a burning ambition to see the Nazis defeated. Desperate for work and a way to help the war effort, he finds the one place that will take a refugee like him: a supply steamer traversing a deadly path past enemy U-boats.
Since their first meeting, Millie Stevens has felt an undeniable connection to Karl. As the war rages, she shares his determination to oppose the Nazis and finds work at the British codebreaking center at Bletchley Park. There she uses all her intellect and determination to break German codes and read U-boat transmissions—or risk losing the man she loves.
Rolf Denhart will do anything to defend the Fatherland, including long patrols in a cramped U-boat. But rumors from Germany leave him uneasy, forcing a choice between loyalty to his homeland, the safety of his family, and his peace of conscience.
In the midst of war, three lives are woven together to create an epic tapestry of love and loss, joy and pain, sacrifice and courage.

Story
An unforgettable story of children in wartime, of heroism at sea, and - above all - of courage and the power of the human spirit. On September 17, 1940, at a little after 10 at night, a German submarine torpedoed the passenger liner S.S. City of Benares in the North Atlantic. There were 406 people on board, but the ship's prized passengers were 90 children whose parents had elected to send their boys and girls away from Great Britain to escape the ravages of World War II. They were considered lucky, headed for quiet, peaceful, and relatively bountiful Canada.

After watching my mother succumb to a mysterious illness, I promised myself two things. I'd find the cure for what ravaged her and leave the godforsaken city where she abandoned me. Four years later, I received an acceptance letter from Dracadia University, one of the oldest most prestigious schools in the country. Nestled on a secluded island off the coast of Maine, it's rumored to be haunted by the souls of the mental patients exiled there centuries before, those whose bones are said to make up the island's white sandy shores. And restless ghosts aren't even its most daunting peculiarity.

Story
Aisley’s young life was changed forever when her father accompanied King Alfred into battle and lost his life in a deadly skirmish with the Vikings. Now, almost seven years later, the Vikings are once again rallying on Wessex’s borders, and Aisley fears that her older brother may have treacherous plans to betray the king by aligning himself with the invading Norsemen. But when Aisley encounters a handsome nobleman in the market, she feels the first stirrings of hope. Though they met only once when Aisley was little more than a child, she recognizes the man immediately.

Thank you for the education
I learned a lot more about the war and enjoyed the story. I realize it was fictional but am pretty sure it had historical background.

Beautiful story of sacrifice
This was a beautifully written story of love and sacrifice. I enjoyed the historical details woven through the lives of the three main characters. There are a lot of hard moments, almost to the point that I felt it was overkill on the authors part to prove a point, and I almost stopped listening. But ultimately the story redeemed itself, and I'm grateful I continued. The narrator was fantastic, as well.

One of the best WWII novels of all time!
Wow! I don’t even have words to describe how truly beautiful this story was. Karl and Millie will forever have a piece of my heart. I was so impressed with the way this book shined light on all aspects of the way particularly on the seas and with breaking codes. While slight gut wrenching, this book was truly inspiring and stunning. Grab your tissues (you’ll need a box), but just know this story will grab hold of your heart and not let go. The narrator was FANTASTIC! I wouldn’t change a thing with his performance which is saying something as he did multiple POVs and accents. Truly outstanding, I highly recommend this book and the audio version.
