Publisher's summary

Nick McCarty decides after ten years of black ops assassinations it's time for a change. Against the wishes of his shadow government bosses he has inexplicably managed to become a best-selling author with a string of novels about an assassin named Diego. The novels have made him world famous and provided a cover for his overseas sanctions. But Nick feels something's missing. An employer Nick sometimes takes sanctions from, when they coincide with the wishes of his government sponsors, orders the death of a woman in the witness protection program. Nick sees something in the woman's picture reminding him of someone he knew long ago. After a brief journey up to the restaurant in Northern California where his potential target, Rachel Hunter, works as a waitress, Nick makes a decision to alter his lifestyle. Hayden Tanus, the CEO of Tanus Import/Export looks out the window of his plush office on the Upper East Side of Manhattan wondering briefly if Rachel Hunter was finally dead. The fifty caliber bullet made a small hole in his window and a large one as it exited his head.

In the following days, playing the role of famous author doing research for his new novel, Nick enters Rachel's life. He inadvertently triggers an unforeseen chain of events launching him in a cross country flight with Rachel, her daughter Jean, and Deke the dog. Rachel has secrets. The people still wanting her dead are about to find out a cold blooded killer now stands in their way and body counts mean absolutely nothing to him.

I just can't get enough of Deleos books and Mike's narration. I listen to them over again every other month and when in a bad mood. They can lift my spirits within the first few sentences. Great job!

My 2nd time reading this gripping series!

Okay, let's get real here. Any man who is a cold blooded killer, sexy, and good looking who falls in love (oh, I'd like to be Rachael for one night!) AND can make pancakes? Now that's my total fantasy!
I love pulp fiction, which is why I started this series in the first place. The humor, characters, and impossible situations grab your interest immediately and make this a wild ride with plenty of dead bodies to satisfy hard core pulp fiction fans. I love the series. It's just darn good writing.

Fantastic

What did you love best about Cold Blooded?

I actually read the book as well. I love this story. It's full of action, suspense and humor.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Absolutely. Plot is great and with Nick trying to determine who could be trusted and couldn't be while trying to protect Rachel and her daughter even from the WitSec agents, then the mob, just amazing action and a lot of kills. But, Nick is funny in that he uses a lot of garbage bags, duck tape and bleach.

Have you listened to any of Mike Dennis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

First time hearing this guy and he done a great job I think. I'd buy another book with him narrating if I liked the book first.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Cold Blooded Killer

nought bad for a first novel.

it takes a chapter or too tho get adjusted to the narrator. a little predictable in a Jason Bourne type of story... but i liked it. Super likable characters... reminds me of the movie"Payback"

Disappointing and shallow book.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Everything about the story just seemed too flippant. I gave 2 stars because this story could have had more depth. There could have been so much more potential for this book if the plot would have been more in depth. It was like- Killer gets hired to shoot girl- killer meets girl- killer likes girl- killer decides not to kill girl- killer protects girl- killer then has lots of sex with girl...and by the way, girl has 7 year old daughter. daughter sees and knows too much....oh and by the way the reason girl is being hunted is because she has information that could get her killed....and in between there is a lot of joking around about the killing and sex.I listened to the whole story because I kept waiting for the book to have some meat to it.I just could not care about what happened to any of the main characters because none of them seemed to be worth caring for.....including the little girl because of the flippant way they treated everything that happened.I like humor well enough in thrillers.....the humor just seemed to be there all the time and at the most inappropriate moments. I wish the author could go back and rewrite the story and make it more meaningful. I bought this audio book because it had such a tantalizing plot. It was a lot like when you see a beautiful cake and when you take a bite, the flavor is just not there.it could have been delicious but the baker was too concerned about the outside of the cake that he didn't take the time to put in the ingredients that would have given it a delicious flavor.

What was most disappointing about Bernard Lee DeLeo and RJ Parker ’s story?

I didn't care what happened in the end......because I didn't care about the plot line or the characters. The book just fizzled in the end.

How could the performance have been better?

I didn't care for the narrator. I don't know if it was because of the book or because he would be monotone for a while then a bit more animated when they made a joke out of everything. I dint know if I have heard any of his other performances but this book just didn't seem to fit his narration style.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The plot. That's why the book was disappointing though. It could have been a five star book if it had more depth.

Any additional comments?

I feel cheated!

Entertaining storyline.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The biggest detractor for me while listening to this book was the breaks in the dialogue/narration that seemed to occur at the wrong times. It was difficult at times to stay in the moment, listening to the story, when there would be a pause in the middle of a description of an action or scene.

What did you like best about this story?

The twists and turns. The characters seldom knew who to trust.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Not sure if it was the fault of the narrator or the editor, but there were pauses/breaks at points of the story that there shouldn't have been. I have it downloaded to my phone, and would listen to it when on patrol, and the narration sometimes didn't flow correctly. It seemed heavily edited, and rough at times.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Cold Blooded?

I can't think of any scenes that I would have removed from the story. Everything seemed necessary to the storyline, and I can't recall anything extraneous.

Any additional comments?

The storyline and characters were fairly well developed, but the poor editing/recording really detracted from the quality of the book. Overall, though, I did enjoy the storyline.

Assassin and famous writer

An assassin uses his professional knowledge to become a famous writer who travels around the world. He uses his writing career as a cover for his true passion, killing. At the beginning of this story, Nick the assassin targets a woman whose identity under witness protection is leaked. Nick decides to take advantage of her dilemma to deepen his cover with a ready-made family; so, instead of killing his target, he hooks up with her and her little girl. To further complicate the premise, Nick’s employer disagrees with his choice and targets him too. The new ‘family’ goes on the run.

All characters in this story are completely unlikable – even the little girl. (Well, her dog is ok.) They think little of violence and killing. As Nick survives one unlikely scenario after another, the mother squirms a little at the violence, but recovers quickly and doesn't second guess her relationship with a self-proclaimed psychopathic killer. With only occasional recognition that they make horrid role models, adults shrug and chuckle at a young girl’s blood thirsty attitude. Unbelievable coincidences and rescues are non-stop; so the story moves quickly, lessening the pain of this book’s many problems.

The reader’s robotic style is difficult to hear for long periods, but it fits the main character well, as the assassin feels as deeply as a machine.

Overall, don’t waste a credit.
