Publisher's summary
Atul Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high, yet decisions must be made. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur, why good surgeons go bad. He shows what happens when medicine comes up against the inexplicable: an architect with incapacitating back pain for which there is no physical cause; a young woman with nausea that won't go away; a television newscaster whose blushing is so severe that she cannot do her job. Gawande also ponders the human factor that makes saving lives possible.
At once tough-minded and humane, Complications is a new kind of medical writing, nuanced and lucid, unafraid to confront the conflicts and uncertainties that lie at the heart of modern medicine, yet always alive to the possibilities of wisdom in this extraordinary endeavor.

In gripping prose, one of the world's leading cardiac surgeons lays bare both the wonder and the horror of a life spent a heartbeat away from death. When Stephen Westaby witnessed a patient die on the table during open-heart surgery for the first time, he was struck by the quiet, determined way the surgeons walked away. As he soon understood, this detachment is a crucial survival strategy in a profession where death is only a heartbeat away. In Open Heart, Westaby reflects on over 11,000 surgeries, showing us why the procedures have never become routine and will never be.

They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.

So began Mark Sloan's three-decades-long exploration of the wonders and oddities of human childbirth. Pediatrician, husband, and father, the author has attended nearly 3000 births since that long-ago summer, encountering everything from routine deliveries to tense labor-room dramas.

Story
Not too long ago, there was no coming back from death. But now, with revolutionary medical advances, death has become just another serious complication. As a young medical student, Dr. David Casarett was inspired by the story of a two-year-old girl named Michelle Funk. Michelle fell into a creek and was underwater for over an hour. When she was found she wasn't breathing, and her pupils were fixed and dilated. That drowning should have been fatal. But after three hours of persistent work, a team of doctors and nurses was able to bring her back.

Story
San Francisco's Laguna Honda Hospital is the last almshouse in the country, a descendant of the Hôtel-Dieu (God's hotel) that cared for the sick in the Middle Ages. Ballet dancers and rock musicians, professors and thieves - "anyone who had fallen, or, often, leapt, onto hard times" and needed extended medical care - ended up here. So did Victoria Sweet, who came for two months and stayed for 20 years. Laguna Honda, lower-tech but human-paced, gave Sweet the opportunity to practice a kind of attentive medicine that has almost vanished.

Sometimes in medicine the only way to know what is truly going on in a patient is to operate, to look inside with one's own eyes. This audio is exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealized form, but as it actually is - complicated, perplexing, and profoundly human. Atul Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur and why good surgeons go bad.

It's about time...
When I finished this audio book, these words came to me: It is about time someone took the mysticism out of the medical community. It gives hope in large doses.
This is a very well written, informative book and very well read by the narrator. As a surgical nurse and patient advocate for 25 years, I have seen a lot and worked with hundreds of surgeons and the entire gamut of every physician type that this author speaks of. Yes, in the early days, with the crazy ones and the fools, I have watched the Good Old Boys Club protect their own even when they knew it was the wrong thing to do. But I have also seen true courage, love for the patients, love for the work, unwavering dedication, astounding skill, beautiful and artistic craftsmanship, and absolute advocacy for a patient's wellbeing.
This book helps the reader rethink the outdated impression that doctors should be deified and thus obeyed unequivocally. That there is as much of a balance of good and bad in the medical community as there is in any community and that, with an educated point of view, knowledge becomes your empowerment to help make the decisions effecting your life. This book instills in the reader the imperative to proactively undertake the partnership we all should have with our doctors regarding our own health care. And most importantly, even when to walk away from the situation if needed and seek out another doctor who will acknowledge the partnership. The doctor/author helps with the reader's understanding that the majority of our doctors/surgeons are, after all, only human and though experts at what they do, are simply doing what we do in our professions every day: do the best you know how with what you have to work with.

Thought provoking and entertaining
Atul Gawande is quickly becoming my favorite author. Even the terrible, cheese-and-piano/filled performance (between the short stories) cannot bring the overall rating down; the author is simply to good a storyteller. Gawande takes a brutally honest and introspective look at medicine and humanity. Simply beautiful.

I couldn't stop listening!
This is a fabulous book for anyone with an interest in medicine. I greatly admire Dr. Gawande's candor in providing this fascinating, behind the scenes account of doctors and patients. I listen to books when I drive and there were a number of evenings when I just sat in my driveway because I couldn't put this book down.
My only criticism is not about the story but the Audible.com use of random music throughout. There is annoying piano music at various places - not apparently tied to new topic areas or chapters. I found it distracting and irritating.

As usual, great book.....!
I have inhaled each of Dr Gawande’s books; I found them years and years ago, and have jumped on each as it has come out. I have never been disappointed.
Having worked in the medical field for many years (I started before we had CPR, ICU’s, monitors, any disposable equipment) I have seen so many advances, but the underlying humanity of people caring for patients has not changed ... there is a lot of hard science behind medicine, but the emotion and caring remains. The tricky part as well as the great part is to use cold science to underlie the warmth of caring for others.
My only wish: Audible: PLEASE find someone to correct the pronunciation of your narrators! Every time a story develops a smooth flow, and I am immersed: SCREECH! Some technical term is mispronounced!! It destroys the atmosphere, and takes a bit of effort and time to dive back into the flow. I have asked this with each review of a medical book. Any technical term in any field should be pronounced properly; you should have technical advisors or the authors to ensure this!!!!

it is a book on science
This is a book on theory and practice of medicine and the philosophy of science that informs them. It would be wrong to read it as a consumer-oriented book. Read in proper light, one is impressed of Dr. Gawande's intellectual honesty and curiosity. It is very well written and very thought provoking.
