Publisher's summary

With a foreword by Ron Paul

If you believe in the unhampered free market, The New York Times columnist Paul Krugman thinks you're an idiot.

This book is a relentless assault on the ideas of Krugman and on the Keynesian economics that would have the government direct the economy in order to maximize prosperity and prevent recessions.

In fact, the more they try to manage the economy the worse they make it - as during the housing bubble years when the Fed and the federal government colluded to gin up the housing market in order to keep the economy robust after 9/11. Oops.

Unfortunately for Krugman and his followers, Krugman is able to declare victory for Keynesianism only by citing highly selective data, by ignoring or misrepresenting his own predictions, or by misstating the views of his opponents. Krugman even claims to have predicted the housing bubble - after having called for the very policies that created it.

Economist Robert Murphy (PhD, NYU) has an uncanny ability to recall Krugman's columns and interviews and puts his command of this material to devastating use in this book. As Murphy shows, in no way can it be said that Keynesian analysis has won the day. To the contrary, the Austrian School - which has been critical of government intervention, particularly central banking - has been vindicated in episode after episode.

Topics include:

  • The Great Depression
  • Obamacare
  • Krugman's predictions
  • Monetary policy
  • Climate change
  • Financial "reform"
  • Employment and wages
  • The minimum wage
  • Business cycles
  • Stimulus

Listen to this book, and never lose a debate again.

Outdoing Yourself

Bob Murphy really outdid himself with this work and Tom Woods' narration is perfection. I recommend this book to anyone interested in hearing commonplace economic 'knowledge' of the most famous Keynesian pushed through the Mises' Meat Grinder of Austrian Business Cycle Theory.

Fantastic and concise!

The book was great and due to the nature of its creation there was s natural retread on topics that serviced review. My only criticism is the article dates would better serve the audio version at the beginning of each article to help framing.

The Best! Great book. Dr Murphy is brilliant. Tom Woods reading is excellent as well except for one repeated sentence.

Magnificent work.

Magnificent work. Murphy explains economics so well and Woods narration is wonderful. Woods should do more audiobooks.

Author makes economics entertaining

The book somewhat resembles the “The City of God”, as in Robert P Murphy Ph.D. The opposing views a voice and then makes a case of why their statements were flawed with wit and since Tom Woods Ph.D. is the narrator he knows right where and how to emphasize Bob’s articles; as the two host a weekly podcast “Contra Krugman” and their chemistry from the podcast seeps through...

ps the transcripts of the podcast would be pretty humorous having Tom Woods banter with himself as Bob Murphy, which Bob brings up in one of the most recent episodes.

Amazing book!!! Must read!!

This book is incredible and I absolutely love that it was read by Tom Woods. You don’t need to know a whole lot about economics to understand the arguments Bob Murphy makes. He breaks things down so intuitively that it makes you wonder how the Paul Krugmans of the world are able to get it so wrong.

Krugman demolished, Keynesianism on the ropes

having read about 75% other the essays contained within the volume herein I can confidently say that, even if you think you've already read most of Bob Murphy's anti-krugman/Keynesian articles already, this compilation of works will undoubtedly improve upon your current understanding of both Austrian economics and the Keynesian economics of Paul Krugman, the NY times columnist and most prominent Keynesian of his generation. Thoroughly demolishing his opponent, Murphy graciously concedes far more than his intellectual adversary ever would to him and still out argues Krugman using Krugman's own chosen data and tests. while not entirely perfect, this volume comes as close to demolishing the entire Keynesian project as Hazlitt's own takedown of the original New Economics of Keynes so many decades ago ever could, if not surpassing it entirely, at least for the modern generation of economists and interested lay person.

A timeless masterpiece!

The entire book is composed of articles by Bob (Robert) Murphy, answering to the weekly (or even hourly) fallacies and contradictions produced by Paul Krugman, during a span of 7-8 years. Despite the ephemeral nature of these responses, the issues at play are timeless in nature. I heard this book during the pre-election madness of 2020, in the midst of Coronavirus pandemic induced depression. The economic discourse of today was exactly the same as in 2008-2010 crisis and the remedies proposed by Krugman are the same with the ones proposed right now. Bob's explanations and answers to the fundamendal economic issues that plague our lives are educational, entertaining and modestly put ... brilliant. Tom Wood's voice gives life and warmth to this project. Well done guys!
