Out of a job and down on her luck, life doesn’t seem to be getting any better when her estranged father, Brice Campbell, a flamboyant personal injury attorney, shows up at her mother’s funeral after a 20-year absence. Worse, he’s remarried - to Drue’s eighth-grade frenemy, Wendy, now his office manager. And they’re offering her a job. Burke's newest client is a woman named Flood, who has the face of an angel, the body of a high-priced stripper, and the skills of a professional executioner. She wants Burke to find a monster for her - so she can kill him with her bare hands. In this thriller, Andrew Vachss's renegade private eye teams up with a lethally gifted avenger to follow a child's murderer through the catacombs of New York, where every alley is blind and the penthouses are as dangerous as the basements.

Story
Years ago, South Florida cop Jack Carpenter beat up a murder suspect named Simon Skell, a dangerous predator with a penchant for playing the Rolling Stones' "Midnight Rambler" as he tortured young women. When Jack lost his temper, he lost his job and marriage, too; so as Skell's early release from prison draws near, the tarnished hero, now a specialist in missing-child cases, sees an opportunity to make things right.

Read, don't scold
What did you like about this audiobook?
It has attractive cover art, which makes it stand out in the lists. There is not much else redeeming. The story is awkward, the heroine is unlikeable, the "mystery" is silly, and there aren't even any memorable secondary characters. Nah, this one is a dud.
How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?
What subject matter?
Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?
I don't know if S. A. Stolinsky (author) and Stephanie Stolinsky (narrator) are the same person, but if so, I would suggest that she invest in a reader with talent and experience.
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
The narrator's voice was the "story" here. I have never experienced an audiobook read like this - that voice is so harsh it is cringeworthy. No way does it convince a listener that it represents a pretty, fluffy trophy wife/actress/goofball "detective". Instead it conjures images of bitter, slightly unwell, harping and complaining old aunt-in-law. I am returning this one and getting my credit back.
Do you have any additional comments?
I don't like these questions that Audible generates, apparently at random. After I previewed my first review, I went back to edit and the questions had changed altogether, so that my responses did not match. How about letting me write my review in my own words?
