Verily, the story Biff has to tell is a miraculous one, filled with remarkable journeys, magic, healings, kung fu, corpse reanimations, demons, and hot babes. Even the considerable wiles and devotion of the Savior's pal may not be enough to divert Joshua from his tragic destiny. But there's no one who loves Josh more (except maybe "Maggie," Mary of Magdalan) and Biff isn't about to let his extraordinary pal suffer and ascend without a fight.

Story
In July 1890, Vincent van Gogh went into a cornfield and shot himself. Or did he? Why would an artist at the height of his creative powers attempt to take his life... and then walk a mile to a doctor's house for help? Who was the crooked little "color man" Vincent had claimed was stalking him across France? And why had the painter recently become deathly afraid of a certain shade of blue? These are just a few of the questions confronting Vincent's friends who vow to discover the truth of van Gogh's untimely death.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

After the stunning historical novels The Clearing and The Missing, Tim Gautreaux now ranges freely through contemporary life with 12 new stories and eight from previous collections. Most are set in his beloved Louisiana, many hard by or on the Mississippi River, others in North Carolina, and even in midwinter Minnesota. But generally it's heat, humidity, and bugs that beset his people as they wrestle with affairs of the heart, matters of faith, and the pros and cons of tight-knit communities.

If you've never read a Repairman Jack novel, this is the place to begin. It's 1990. A twenty-one-year-old named Jack has dropped out of college, leaving his old life behind to build a new one in New York City. Manhattan's rough edges are jagged enough to shred any unwary newcomer, but perhaps not one who is determined to stay off the grid, at any cost, in the busiest metropolis on earth. And to do so, he'll have to take jobs of a less than legal nature.

Why would an artist at the height of his creative powers attempt to take his life... and then walk a mile to a doctor's house for help? Who was the crooked little "color man" Vincent had claimed was stalking him across France? And why had the painter recently become deathly afraid of a certain shade of blue? This novel by Carl Hiaasen, author of Tourist Season and Native Tongue, begins as most thrillers do, with a killing. But this is no everyday, hum-drum, garden variety killing. Our hero, Nick Stranahan, a 42-year-old private investigator who has killed five men and been married five times, skewers his attacker's aorta with the razor-sharp bill of a stuffed marlin.

Not Enough Agency
My only disappointment with this story is that the main character was more along for a ride than in control of his own destiny. He was not his own savior enough. However, Minty Fresh was very cool.

loved the narrator for this book! He is energetic and makes you want to keep listening. The book itself is so funny and really captures the "regular guy in a weird situation" feel perfectly! If you want a book to make you laugh but is also exciting this book is for you!

Not bad
I really enjoy Christopher Moore's work. The audible books I've listened to have been entertaining. However, this was not my favorite. I don't think it was the story itself, but the narrator. He was dry, and didn't seem interested in portraying the story effectively. I would recommend, but be prepared to sit through the narrator's dullness to enjoy the story.

Chapters don't align
There are some issues with the audio book, and how it is formatted. None of the chapters aligned anywhere in this title. The narrator would state a new chapter, but the device wouldn't recognize it. It was even worse on the Bluetooth in my car, which didn't even align to the chapter on my phone? The whole thing was a navigational mess. None of the other titles come close to this.
That said, this is an early piece of Christopher Moore work, it was not as complex and deep as some of more recent books, but still true holds true to his style. I fell in love with these characters more than most of his stories, I can't fully explain why they spoke to me so much, but they did. It had one of those endings where I drove in silence for a long while after completing this one. I needed to soak in the book. I only wish there was a sequel.

The Coyote and the Man who gave him a new story: A Review
Whether it’s a western, urban city or the open, rural expanses of reservation towns... Coyote is there; making mischief. You’ll love him, because you’ll hate him. The spirit animal is given a unique, human persona in a way that only Christopher Moore could envision. Coyote leap frogs back-and-forth between antagonist and protagonist. He’s the hero, while only concerned about himself. Every moment of this story is filled with the bittersweetness of humanity. The characters are exquisitely unique and their interconnections provide context and enjoyment. Moore delivers yet another fantastically creative story, worth every page it fills. If I were to point out an area needing improvement it, it would only be that the ending concludes quickly and feels a little rushed. But that could easily be rectified with a sequel; which I’m looking forward to immensely.

His Worst Book
I have read every book by Christopher Moore. He is my favorite author. This is the only book I did not like. Oh, it had its moments, of course, hinting at his brilliance that would show up in his future works, but it felt like he was just practicing when he wrote this early book.
