Publisher's summary

Lizzy pulled the covers over her head. Then she realized what was being dragged behind the person with the torch. She rammed her fist into her mouth to stop herself from screaming.

For decades the Moore Asylum was home to the forgotten children of Brooklyn Bay. But ever since a scandal forced its closure, the abandoned building has cast an imposing shadow. Until now - when an elderly man is found dead, his body strapped to an ancient gurney.

Detective Lucy Harwin, still reeling from a previous case that ended in the devastating murder of a mother and her child, finds herself on the trail of a killer ruthlessly fixated on avenging the asylum's wrongs.

What disturbing secrets lie within the asylum's walls? Together with her partner, Detective Mattie Jackson, Lucy begins to unearth its terrible history and the horrors endured by the vulnerable children.

As the attacks escalate and a woman is murdered on her own doorstep, Lucy is forced into a terrifying game of cat and mouse with a twisted individual. But can Lucy stop a murderer with nothing left to lose?

An absolutely terrifying and gripping thriller that will chill fans of MJ Arlidge, Angela Marsons, and Rachel Abbott to the bone.

LOVED IT!!

This was one of the best I’ve read. It kept me intrigued from the minute I started! Never at any point was it drawn out and it had me trying to guess right to the very end! Can’t wait to read more books written by Helen!

Good book

I really liked this book except for all the unnecessary F-bombs. Thus the 4 stars for the story.
Alison Campbell is my favorite female narrator.

This is the second book

Start with Last Light, then Dark House, then Dying Breath, Last Light is a prequel to Dark House. If you start with the one labeled "Book 1", "Book 3" takes you back but it never says it is a prequel . You will already know the ending.

This is BOOK 2. Last Light is BOOK 1

This is listed as book 1, however, it's Book 2. The order in which these Lucy Harwin novels should be read are as follows:

Last Light
Dark House
Dying Breath

I hope that saves others the frustration of feeling like they are missing information when reading this book. You ARE missing information because this is actually book #2.

Could not put this down!

Lucy is back at work after being suspended and she is thrown back into the deep end by a horrific murder at a vacant former asylum. When a second murder occurs in as many days, and is also a former employee of the asylum, the investigation turns towards revenge killings. Lucy and Matty’s personal lives are interwoven in the story and that lends to the humanity of our fave detectives. Astounding ending!

Too depressing re treatment of children

I like the author but can’t handle the dreadful treatment of the children. I didn’t finish it.

Decent over-all

What did you like best about The Lost Children? What did you like least?

Personally I loved that it wasn't "drawn out" at any point. It was fairly fast moving. However, because of this the characters by the end I didn't feel any connection with

What aspect of Alison Campbell’s performance would you have changed?

Slightly MORE emotion during the distressing and tumultuous parts.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

In theaters, No. On Netflix, yes.

Any additional comments?

Not a bad book to dive into while waiting for one you're anticipating.
