Am Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory knallen die Korken. An diesem Tag sendet das Nancy-Grace-Roman-Space-Telescope die ersten Bilder aus dem Weltall, dessen Ziel die Erforschung der Expansionsgeschichte des Universums ist.
Mit den ersten Daten kippt die Stimmung, da das Universum nicht wie angenommen expandiert, sondern offenbar schrumpft.
Das String-Paradoxon:
Dr. Ellen Duvall ist Physikerin, 36 Jahre alt, ledig, attraktiv und wird von Kollegen aufgrund ihrer Besserwisserei gemieden. Ihre unpopulären Berechnungen stimmen immer. Sie sagt voraus, dass das Universum in 47 Jahren kollabieren wird.
Seamus Halligan ist Schotte, 42 Jahre alt, geschieden, Vater von drei Töchtern und arbeitet als Verbindungsoffizier im Rahmen der Five-Eyes-Alliance an der Ostküste. Die Spinner von der Uni versauen ihm den Urlaub.
Dass Carl Weathers mit 71 als Hausmeister am Smithsonian arbeitet, liegt an seiner Sorgfalt, sich auch um Kleinigkeiten zu kümmern und einem verstorbenen Gönner, dessen Erbe das Institut langfristig finanziert.
Ellen wird aufgrund ihrer nicht widerlegbaren Berechnungen weggelobt. Als Verwaltungschefin soll sie mit den Erben und Großspendern eine einvernehmliche Lösung finden, einen verwaisten und teuer zu unterhaltenden Laborkomplex auflösen sowie Carl in den Ruhestand schicken.
Eine Entscheidung mit Folgen: Carl will in dem alten Labor den Strom abschalten, bei Seamus läuft das Telefon heiß und Ellen erkennt mit Schrecken, sich verrechnet zu haben. Den Super Bowl am nächsten Sonntag wird niemand mehr erleben.
