Als Ruth endlich dort eintrifft, macht sie eine erstaunliche Entdeckung. Unter dem Ort erstreckt sich ein riesiger Hohlraum, der das Leben der Bewohner von Groß-Einland auf merkwürdige Weise zu bestimmen scheint. Überall finden sich versteckte Hinweise auf das Loch und seine wechselhafte Historie, doch keiner will darüber sprechen. Nicht einmal, als klar ist, dass die Statik des gesamten Ortes bedroht ist. Wird das Schweigen von der einflussreichen Gräfin der Gemeinde gesteuert? Und welche Rolle spielt eigentlich Ruths eigene Familiengeschichte? Je stärker sie in die Verwicklungen Groß-Einlands zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus dringt, desto vehementer bekommt Ruth den Widerstand der Bewohner zu spüren. Doch sie gräbt tiefer und ahnt bald, dass die geheimnisvollen Strukturen im Ort ohne die Geschichte des Loches nicht zu entschlüsseln sind.
