Publisher's summary

As a physician in the ER of a rural South Carolina hospital, Dr. Rhea Lynch is a dedicated healer, a woman of science, and to some degree, a skeptic. But her most fundamental beliefs are put to the test with the arrival of a traveling faith healer, whose "cures" produce some baffling mysteries: a young quadriplegic woman can suddenly move her arms; a chronic pain sufferer begins to dance again. Events go from bizarre to deadly with the arrival of a gravely injured but violent young woman determined to practice a dark, deadly magic. As the pieces of this puzzle begin to fall into place, Rhea will find her beliefs, her skill and her understanding tested in unfathomable ways as she enters a realm where science and strange faiths collide.

The Dialog Sparkles

This is the first time I have read a book by Gwen Hunter. I discovered after I bought the book it is part three of a series. Apparently the series has been out since 2004, but with the new release in Kindle and audio format it has revived the series.

The series is set in Dawkins County, a rural part of South Carolina. Rheane Rheaburn Lynch, M.D. is an emergency room physician for Dawkins County’s small hospital. This particular book deals with faith healing. There is lots of medical terminology, all explained and lots of suspense, action, humor as well as small southern town politics.

Hunter has developed highly rich complex characters and a compelling suspenseful plot. It is a fast easy read. Carol Hendrickson narrates the story.

Narrator Voice

I honestly think if I had read this book, it would have been fine. I just couldn’t get past listening to to the horrible voice and accent of the narrator. I live in the South, but I am not familiar with this type of accent.

Boring!!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A lot more action & suspense, less female drama.

What could Gwen Hunter have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I was expecting a medical thriller novel similar to a Robin Cook novel. This is more of a female novel concerned with what I assume to be everyday female thoughts such as one's own physical attractiveness, should I or shouldn't I date or sleep with this man or that, etc., instead of a gripping medical thriller. I forced myself to listened to the first half of the book before I finally gave up on it. Not a man's book!

Would you be willing to try another one of Carol Hendrickson’s performances?

The reading was too fast. Ms Hendrickson tried to add drama, tension and urgency in her reading, but one cannot add what's not in the book. Ms. Hendrickson tried too hard to make an uninteresting book interesting and could not pull it off. I would be willing to try another one of her performance, its not her fault the novel was bad. P.S as stated above I only listened to half of the book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment
