Publisher's summary

Owen Deathstalker, last of the infamous warrior Clan, always considered himself more of a writer than a fighter, preferring his history books to making any actual history with a sword. But books won't protect him from Her Imperial Majesty Lionstone XIV, who just outlawed and condemned Owen to death, without any explanation, reason, or warning. No wonder she's called the Iron Bitch.

Now, on the run from Imperial starcruisers, shady mercenaries, and just about everyone else in the Empire, Owen's options are limited. Though the name Deathstalker still commands respect in certain quarters, out on the Rim, Owen is lucky he can cobble together a makeshift team of castoffs, including an ex-pirate, a cyborg, and a bounty hunter. But allies won't be enough to save him.

If he's to live, Owen can either run forever...or take down the corrupt Empire. To do that, he'll need the fabled Darkvoid Device - an artifact dating back to the first Deathstalker and perhaps the only weapon powerful enough to help this ragtag rebellion win. The time has come for Owen to finally embrace his Deathstalker heritage...and all the blood and death that go along with it.

Critic reviews

"Green blends derring-do, space battles and wry banter aplenty to form an eminently satisfying space opera." ( Booklist)

Great story.

Simon Green is a great author and this is a fabulous saga with a grand cast of characters. It has the lot, aliens, robots, evil plots, alter egos. It sounds superfluous but it all hangs together wonderfully.
I'm going to get the next book in the series right now.

Like game of thrones in space!! Only better lol

Absolutely loved this book! Some of Green's best work. Full of intrigue and suspense with comedy and a little romance sprinkled here and there. Exquisitely written and thought out. Really reminds me of game of thrones, and not simply because of the use of the same words lol.

Hidden Gem

I wasn’t familiar with Simon R. Green’s work prior to Deathstalker. Nevertheless, the book was on sale and the summary sounded interesting. Buying it blindly turned out being a well rewarded leap of faith indeed. Deathstalker is very well written and narrated, the characters have strength of personality, and the story is simply fantastic.
If you’re a fan of Galaxy’s Edge or martial-based SF epics in general, then you’ll dig this too.

Very Good Space Opera

Reminds me of Star wars the early version. Fighting against the oppression of the Tyranny of the empire. Owen gets on the bad side of the Empress and has to go on the run. On his way he picks up other people who have their reasons for hating the empire. Will have to listen to the next to see where this ends up going.

Great book for Green fans and new listeners

The story is intricate and like Greens other series verbal vision. I was shocked to learn it was published in 1995. It could have been released today and been just as relevant.

Interesting story

I always find it sad when men write science-fiction. Here we have a galaxy wide empire run by a woman but yet aristocratic females are still second-class citizens, they have no control over their own lives, they are not trained to fight, etc. etc. I mean I understand that riders have the right to invent their own world, but the whole point of fiction is the writer Creates the entire universe here. She has the ability to fix any perceived flaws to change our history to make a new history and therefore a new future and yet there’s still this gender difference. It’s even worse when female writers do this. Secondly, I read the nightside series before I read this, and, this writer has this flaw, or maybe it’s a fable or a bad habit of repeating the same basic and almost inconsequential details way too much. How many times do we need to be told that I disruptor needs two minutes to recharge? How many times do we have to be told that the protagonist is “the Deathstalker“? And don’t get me started on his almost random flaws in grammar. I’ve noticed more so with British writers they don’t know or they’re not taught or they choose not to use the subjunctive tents. Paul in all this is a great read. It’s fun but I wish I had been the editorcause it could be so much better. I don’t have high hopes, but maybe the next book in the series will have some of these errors corrected.
