Publisher's summary
Best-selling author Stasi Eldredge shows us how to choose a joy that stands against the tides of life's real and often overwhelming pain.
Defiant Joy will help you:
- get off the emotional roller coaster and experience daily joy;
- learn how to have a posture of holy defiance when circumstances threaten to weigh down your soul;
- and find new perspectives on painful circumstances and see how God sometimes interferes with your life to heal and transform you.
We are called to live. And, miraculously, to live with joy.
We all spend a lot of energy reaching for happiness, but we are never quite able to hang on to it. Real life happens, and our circumstances take us on an emotional roller-coaster ride. So the Bible’s call to “be joyful always” sounds almost crazy - and out of reach. But it doesn’t have to be.
Joy is meant to be ours, a joy that is defiant in the face of this broken world. This joy is not simply happiness on steroids; it’s the unyielding belief that sorrow and loss do not have the final say. It’s the stubborn determination to be present to whatever may come and to interpret both goodness and grief by the light of heaven.
In Defiant Joy, Stasi Eldredge invites us with courage, candor, and tender vulnerability to a place beyond sadness or happiness. She shows us how to maintain a posture of holy defiance that neither denies nor diminishes our pain but dares to live with expectant, unwavering hope.

How would it feel to enter into prayer with confidence and assurance - certain that God heard you and that your prayers would make a difference? It would likely feel amazing and unfamiliar. That's because often our prayers seem to be met with silence or don't appear to change anything. Either response can lead to disappointment or even despair in the face of our ongoing battles and unmet longings - especially when we don't know if we're doing something wrong or if some prayers just don't work.

Story
This revolutionary book about our future is based on the simple idea that, according to the Bible, heaven is not our eternal home - the New Earth is. As Jesus says in the Gospel of Matthew, the next chapter of our story begins with "the renewal of all things", by which he means the Earth we love in all its beauty, our own selves, and the things that make for a rich life: music, art, food, laughter, and all that we hold dear. Everything shall be renewed "when the world is made new".

Follow one man’s journey of learning to hear the voice of God. By putting words to the things God has shown him through some amazing experiences, John Eldredge helps listeners shed light on the miraculous truths that God is showing them right now. Our deepest need is to live in conversation with God. To hear his voice. To follow him intimately. This is the single most life-changing habit that a human being can adopt, because it brings us back to the source of life. Yet most Christians have never been taught how to have a conversation with the Creator.

Story
Life often looks so very different than we hoped or expected. Some events may simply catch us off guard for a season, but others shatter us completely. We feel disappointed and disillusioned at best and overwhelmed and hopeless at worst. We quietly start to wonder about the reality of God’s goodness and why he allows us to suffer and experience grief and loss. Lysa TerKeurst understands this deeply. But after many tears, godly counseling, and prayerful seeking, she's also discovered that our disappointments can be the divine appointments our souls need to radically encounter God.

Sometimes it seems we just can't get what we want. Circumstances thwart our best-laid plans. We struggle to live a heartfelt life. Worst of all, says Eldredge, the modern church mistakenly teaches its people to kill desire (calling it sin) and replace it with duty or obligation (calling it sanctification).

At our very core, every one of us is a "twisted sister" within whom the flesh and spirit battle constantly for control. In The Hardest Peace, Kara doesn’t offer answers for when living is hard, but rather she asks us to join her in moving away from fear and control and toward peace and grace. Most of all, she draws us back to the God who is with us in the mundane and the suffering, and who shapes even our unmet expectations and pain into beauty.

A Heartsaver!
Wonderful Read! With the state of the world we are in there is so much pain, bait, and sadness. Even genuine happy people these events can really break you down and steal your joy. Stasi’s book revived the hope inside of me of being Defiantly Joyful, not denying the occurrences and situations but defiantly deciding to be joyful through the pain - and provided so much relief that I don’t have to do it all! Even in my darkest hours, all I have to do is choose to be joyful, and He fulfills the rest as I look to Him instead of my situation.

a good addition
This is an excellent addition to your Stasi Eldredge library. Read by the author, thank goodness. you may need to buy a hard copy also so you can highlight the messages that speak to you. In my case practically entire chapters. This book touches on things not common in Christianity like boundaries and benevolent detatchment. Definitley recommend!

This book changed my life.
This book resonated with my heart so deeply. I related to it with my own feelings and experiences and learned so incredibly much throughout. God blessed and spoke to me so much through this book. I’m so happy I read it. Listening to this was an amazing experience especially as Stasi narrates her own book. Please read and/or listen to this if you feel you need to learn about and have more joy in any capacity. I think that this could help transform anyone.

Perfectly timed
Life, for me, has gone less than planned. Even though I've struggled at times to rain hopeful and full of joy, I often get told, "You're one of the most joyful people I know." Staci, in being raw and vulnerable, helped give me insight on what others are seeing as well as practical ways to practice being joyful. I'm so so thankful that she penned this book. ♥️

Life giving!
There’s been a lot of death in our lives lately - this was a welcome beacon of what is to come and how to live and thrive in the meantime. I love all of Stasi’s books! They are like drinking water in a thirsty land.
