Story
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever. Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

A vicious 15-year-old droog is the central character of this 1963 classic, a frightening fable about good and evil, and the meaning of human freedom. In Anthony Burgess' nightmare vision of the future, where the criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, who talks in a brutal invented slang that brilliantly renders his and his friends' social pathology.

Charles Frazier puts his remarkable gifts in the service of a lean, taut narrative while losing none of the transcendent prose, virtuosic storytelling, and insight into human nature that have made him one of the most beloved and celebrated authors in the world. Now, with his brilliant portrait of Luce, a young woman who inherits her murdered sister’s troubled twins, Frazier has created his most memorable heroine. Before the children, Luce was content with the reimbursements of the rich Appalachian landscape....

Story
Evelyn Waugh's 1934 novel is a bitingly funny vision of aristocratic decadence in England between the wars. It tells the story of Tony Last, who, to the irritation of his wife, is inordinately obsessed with his Victorian Gothic country house and life. When Lady Brenda Last embarks on an affair with the worthless John Beaver out of boredom with her husband, she sets in motion a sequence of tragicomic disasters that reveal Waugh at his most scathing.

Exacting yet unpredictable, pithy yet complex, J. M. Coetzee’s The Pole tells the story of Wittold Walccyzkiecz, a vigorous, extravagantly white-haired pianist and interpreter of Chopin who becomes infatuated with Beatriz, a stylish Spanish patron of the arts, after she helps organize his concert in Barcelona. Although Beatriz, a married woman, is initially unimpressed by Wittold and his “gleaming dentures,” she soon finds herself pursued and ineluctably swept into his world.

Publisher's summary
Earphones Award Winner (AudioFile Magazine)
The smash-hit best seller that inspired the acclaimed 1972 film starring Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox is now available in unabridged audio for the very first time.
The setting is the Georgia wilderness, where the state's most remote white-water river awaits. In the thundering froth of that river, in its echoing stone canyons, four men on a canoe trip discover a freedom and exhilaration beyond compare. And then, in a moment of horror, the adventure turns into a struggle for survival as one man becomes a human hunter who is offered his own harrowing deliverance.
This classic tale is vividly read by movie and TV star and Audie Award-winning narrator Will Patton.

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire.

Absurdly logical, mercilessly real, gathering it's own tumultuous momentum for the ultimate brush with commodity training, JR captures the listener in the cacophony of voices that revolves around this young captive of his own myths. The disturbing clarity with which this finished writer captures the ways in which we deal, dissemble, and stumble through our words - through our lives - while the real plans are being made elsewhere makes JR the extraordinary novel that it is.

Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

The Mississippi River, known as “America’s River” and Mark Twain are practically synonymous in American culture. The popularity of Twain’s steamboat and steamboat pilot on the ever-changing Mississippi has endured for over a century. A brilliant amalgam of remembrance and reportage, by turns satiric, celebratory, nostalgic, and melancholy, Life on the Mississippi evokes the great river that Mark Twain knew as a boy and young man and the one he revisited as a mature and successful author.

Try Muting a Movie
I haven't watched Deliverance in a very long time, but I decided to read the book. When I was a kid, I was never into Tom Sawyer, Hardy Boys, or other boyhood adventures. I found them to be too slow and too clean for my liking. At the time, I probably watch Rambo First Blood without my parents' supervision until the video tape broke. I was that kid that blew up his army men, played with matches and explore dark hidden paths, where little boys shouldn't go.
What makes these books and movies so great, such as Deliverance and Rambo, there is no language barriers to tell the story. The plot isn't too complex for someone to follow. Understanding the dialogue isn't important as watching the action in the movie. You can know what is going on just by watching the characters on the screen.
One of my memories of my grandma is, she used to love watching old western movies. My grandma barely spoke English, but the movies was straight forward enough for someone to understand without words. I cannot remembered if she watched Deliverance with me, but when First Blood was release on VHS, I can remember watching it over and over with her.
James Dickey wrote Deliverance to be simple and fast pace. It is not a complex story at all, but the simplicity of the plot and basic character development makes the movie and book a classic.
Next time, try muting a movie, such as most kung fu flicks from the 70's and you will be amaze at how much you understand the plot.

Better than the movie!
This is an oldie but a goodie. And so much better than the movie. The descriptive narration transports you to a place you really don't want to be. . . and tosses you into the raging river and into the heinous crimes -- man against man -- that transpire there. Difficult to listen to at times but even more difficult are the decisions made on the river. Morality questioned at its core.

Would you listen to Deliverance again? Why?
No because its subject is not pleasant, and now I know what happened. I might watch the movie one day,
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There is one shocking scene which defines the book. It left me with my mouth hanging open, thinking OMG!
Any additional comments?
This is not a story that is to be enjoyed because of its subject matter, yet I had to keep listening to the end, to find out what happened.

What did you love best about Deliverance?
enjoyed learning some of the backstory on the Movie, production, etc and James Dickey.......also - close tie between which was better - Book or Movie - usually one much preferred over the other.....
Have you listened to any of Will Patton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Top 1-3 narrators in my experience with Audible. Alas Babylon also a great performance.
