About this listen

When a small town in the Pacific Northwest is rocked by a shocking murder, Maggie Blackthorne hunts a killer still lurking in the surrounding forest.

After a state trooper is killed under mysterious circumstances, Oregon State Police sergeant Maggie Blackthorne is assigned to the case. The investigation takes her to Desolation Ridge in the Umatilla National Forest, where the suspect is reported to be hiding out with a possible hostage.

It’s late fall. Daylight is scarce, and there is a fierce chill in the air. To make matters worse, a deadly cougar has been spotted nearby.

But as Maggie and her partner Hollis trudge on, uncovering clues and dealing with their own tense past, one thing is clear:

Somewhere amongst these towering pines, a murderer is watching them.

Allyson Ryan is the best reader in audiobooks

Story is pretty good. Tired of hearing about Duncan's broad shoulders, graying hair and green eyes and how she falls in love with him every day.

Pronounce the words right! But love the story.

I'd have given the narrator a 5 star if she'd just research how to pronounce the words correctly. I've lived in Oregon all my life. I worked for the Malheur Forest Service for 3 years (pronounced like Mal hyur...or even Mal yur...not the French pronunciation). There's a song on YouTube Malheur County Night...go listen. In fact you can find the correct pronunciations on YouTube. Willamette - Will AM ett. Coeur d'Alene - Core d' Lane, Wallowa - wuhl OW uh. At least she gets Umatilla right. She also does a really good job with the characters and voice changes. I really did enjoy Ms. Ryan's narration, except for the mispronunciations.

I went to take a listen when LaVonne Griffen-Valade was made Secretary of State for Oregon this year, after the elected one resigned in disgrace. After reading her resume I wanted to see if she could write a book. I figured there is no way she'd have audible books since she's 70 and only fairly recently published novels. But I was wrong....and I was very pleasantly surprised. Yes, she can write. The character development was well done, as was the storyline. I ended up getting all 4 books currently in production and look forward to when she'll have time to write the 5th.
