About this listen

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller.

From Dean Koontz, the master of suspense, comes an epic thriller about a terrifying killer and the singular compassion it will take to defeat him.

“Canine or human, it is hard to find a more lovable character in fiction than Kipp. Devoted has every mark of a classic.” - Associated Press

Woody Bookman hasn’t spoken a word in his eleven years of life. Not when his father died in a freak accident. Not when his mother, Megan, tells him she loves him. For Megan, keeping her boy safe and happy is what matters. But Woody believes a monstrous evil was behind his father’s death and now threatens him and his mother. And he’s not alone in his thoughts. An ally unknown to him is listening.

A uniquely gifted dog with a heart as golden as his breed, Kipp is devoted beyond reason to people. When he hears the boy who communicates like he does, without speaking, Kipp knows he needs to find him before it’s too late.

Woody’s fearful suspicions are taking shape. A man driven by a malicious evil has set a depraved plan into motion. And he’s coming after Woody and his mother. The reasons are primal. His powers are growing. And he’s not alone. Only a force greater than evil can stop what’s coming next.

Critic reviews

"Readers who were wondering how Koontz could possibly follow up his remarkable Jane Hawk series can breathe a sigh of relief. His new novel finds him still at the top of his game…Scary, sickening (in that good way), and touching, this is a novel that will delight both the author's legion of fans and those who finally decide it's time to find out what this guy Koontz is all about." Booklist (starred review)

"Canine or human, it is hard to find a more lovable character in fiction than Kipp. Devoted has every mark of a classic." —Associated Press

"A warm, deeply engrossing tale…Not to be missed." Providence Journal

Editor's Pick

It’s not always about what you say…
"It’s also about who’s listening. Packed with a winding story plot and an unforgettable performance by Audie Award-winning narrator, Edoardo Ballerini, Devoted has quickly become a new favorite of mine. Thriller mastermind Dean Koontz tells the suspenseful story of 11-year-old Woody Bookman, a young boy with autism and selective mutism who is actually not as silent as everyone around him may think. Kipp can hear Woody loud and clear, but Kipp just happens to be a dog. Woody always suspected there was something nefarious at play in the mysterious death of his father, but had no one to tell and no proof. Now, the same evil forces seem to have returned to finish off his family for good, and Woody must rely on the help of his faithful golden retriever, Kipp, to protect him and his mother."—Nicole R., Audible Editor

A great pseudo sequel to Watchers!

Growing up, my older sister was an avid reader. her favorite novels were primarily horror, thrillers and science fiction. when she found one that she particularly like, she would give it to me after she was done.
A couple decades ago, my sister gave me a book to read, it was called Watchers. I was instantly enthralled with the premise. what wasn't to like? it had monsters it had murder and it had a super intelligent golden retriever named Einstein! Even though I had never had a dog, I had always loved them and was engrossed in this book. throughout the years,
I read watchers every few years, but not until my 40s when I got my first dog (her name is Harley) did I fully appreciate how special the novel was. recently, after having had a dog for 4 years, I once again returned to the novel and given my new and unconditional love for our canine companions, found that I love the book even more than I ever have. Even better, I was able to listen to it on audible when I commuted to work which made the drive more than bearable, but enjoyable. Once again, my sister knowing how she had shaped my taste in literature had recommended that I checked out Devoted. All she would tell me is that it was a spiritual sequel to Watchers.
I decided to use my credit on audible to purchase the book. Knowing Dean Koontz, I figured it would be a good book, but never expected to like it anywhere near as much as I did the original. Right away, I felt a deep connection to the characters and fell in love with kip. the novel is predictable, but it still doesn't take away from the sheer joy and wonder it instills. I don't normally write reviews, but I felt so strongly about how much I enjoyed this novel, that I felt compelled to share and tell people they should give this a listen. if you are a fan of the original novel, or you just have a great love for dogs, science fiction and thrillers, you should definitely check this out.

loved this book!

Absolutely loved this book. When I was listening, I would laugh and I cried, I even told my husband to shut up so I could hear what would happen next. If I had this book in hand it would be a stay up late to finish it kind of book.

A man/boy and his dog

I enjoyed this book more I think than any Dean Koontz book I’ve ever read. I didn’t expect to see a boy with autism, which touches my family and extended family. My beautiful and happy nieces and nephews, who all have dogs of their own. Mostly shih-tzus.

Great plot

Enjoyed this Dean Koontz adventure so very much. The character development and twists along with the intertwined stories was fascinating! The narrator was particularly interesting and made the suspense that much more intriguing.

Excellent!

Almost a sequel to Watchers... Almost... Would it be too much to ask? I've enjoyed Mr. Koontz's novels for over thirty years. I hope we get thirty more!
