About this listen

The Dialogues of Plato (427-347 B.C.) rank with the writings of Aristotle as the most important and influential philosophical works in Western thought. In them Plato cast his teacher Socrates as the central disputant in colloquies that brilliantly probe a vast spectrum of philosophical ideas and issues. None are more exciting and revelatory than the four dialogues - Euthyphro, Apology, Crito and Phaedo - on themes evoked by the trial and death of Socrates, accused by his enemies and detractors of crimes against the state, among them impiety and corruption of the young. In Euthyphro, Socrates explores the concepts and aims of piety and religion; in Apology, he courageously defends the integrity of his teachings; in Crito, he demonstrates his respect for the law in his refusal to flee his death sentence; and in Phaedo embraces death and discusses the immortality of the soul.(P)1995 by Blackstone Audiobooks Ancient Education Philosophy Ancient Philosophy

Old

Every turn of chapter starts back a little bit as if to refresh the listener who has had to dig out the next cassette. There's a lot of other things that date the piece. There's a little bit of audible breathing in the back ground. It's not annoying but it's there. Overall still good.

The way to die

Plato’s clear words are read in a clear calm balanced and unhurried voice. This audiobook is a priceless gem.

I sat amongst great men.

Is how I felt as I listened to this. It was my first audio book but soon; everyone had their own voice and I could not but distinguish. A man died.

The reader is absolutely without motivation.

no motivation, both characters sound the same. it sounds like they forced him to get up in the morning and read it. and it's like he's rolling his eyes when he's reading it. awful rendition

Is that all there is?

A story of the death of Socrates: wrongly condemned by the state. I was expecting something heftier. Kinda weird, but at least it's not too long. Contains some mumbo jumbo. Conservatives and people who believe in reincarnation are gonna love it, as well as anyone who just enjoys any and all sad stuff.

great stuff

the only reason i give 4 stars instead of 5 is that they don't separate the dialogues into different chapters. So if you want to give the apology, you have to hunt for the beginning in the middle of "chapter" 3, or whichever it is

An actual must read

If you picked up this book read it. You will rarely find so much wisdom in one place. I would recommend taking your time. Don’t stretch the book out a year, but you can do it in 3 - 5 days light reading. This was my first read and I had a wonderful experience.
