Peter Hansen, Inhaber eines Hamburger Kaffeekontors nimmt sich an seinem 65. Geburtstag das Leben. Ein Schock für seine drei Söhne, die erst jetzt erfahren, dass er hochverschuldet war. Georg, Robert und Karl müssen entscheiden, wie sie die Existenz ihrer Familie sichern können, da kommt ihnen der Zufall zur Hilfe: Auf einer Geschäftsreise in Wien lernen die drei einen Kameruner Plantagenbesitzer kennen, der seine Kakaoplantage verkaufen will. Da das Geschäft mit dem Kaffee in Hamburg nur schleppend läuft, schlagen sie zu - und gehen von da an getrennte Wege. Während Georg das Kontor in Hamburg aufrecht erhält, bleibt Karl in Wien, wo der Kaffee zunehmend zum Modegetränk avanciert. Robert verlässt mit seiner Frau Elisabeth und den beiden Töchtern Deutschland, um sich um die Kakaoplantage in Kamerun kümmern zu können. Während er und seine jüngste Tochter Luise sich in dem fremden Land gut einleben, sind seine Frau und Tochter Martha wenig begeistert von dem einfachen Landleben. Die Ehe von Robert und Elisabeth wird auf eine harte Probe gestellt, während Luise sich zum ersten Mal in ihrem Leben verliebt - in Hamza, dem Sohn des Vorarbeiters.

Gripping story
Okay, maybe, somewhat melodramatic, but I enjoyed the story all the way to the cliff hanging end of this first book in the series.
