About this listen
Your data has already been sold...Get it back.
There are so many times when we are online, and we need to make sure that our data is safe. We assume that we are doing a good job with a bit of anti-virus protection and carefully selecting what sites we visit. But when some of the big companies we trust, including Facebook, Google, and more, are willing to gather up as much data as they can about all our lives (whether online or not) and then sell it make money, it’s hard to know how safe our information really is.
This audiobook is going to help you prevent that. While it may be difficult to keep this from happening, there are quite a few powerful steps that you can take. These help to keep the hackers out and will stop Google, Bing, and other companies from tracking you and will keep all your personal information nice and safe.
It is amazing how much information companies are able to store about us and sell. Most are willing to hand it over because we don't even realize it is happening; we are just following instructions and typing what we are prompted to type. Taking the proper precautions ahead of time can make life a little bit easier and can put you back in the drivers' seat when it comes to keeping your data safe.
This audiobook will go through some of the simple steps that you can take to keep your information safe and to ensure that no one is able to take your data without your permission again. Some of the thing you will learn:
- The top five big companies already taking your information and selling it for mega profits
- The biggest social media mistakes you need to fix, right now.
- The best hardware to keep the trackers, and the hackers, out
- The minimum must have software that will lock down your system
- How to shut down hackers while you browse safely online
- Bulletproof your email and shop online without a care in the world
- Safe online banking with these secret credit cards
- Safe online banking with these secret credit cardsfive minutes
While there are many ways that companies can take your data and use it for their own benefit, there are just as many ways for you to kick them out and gain control again. Some of the controls are right in front of your eyes provided to you by the companies themselves, and some will require you to take additional steps on your own. Regardless, it is worth considering using privacy controls to protect yourself and your data.
Take back control of your data.

Have you watched the news lately? They can't stop talking about hacking. It is portrayed in movies, shouted about in media headlines, and typically gets a lot of attention. In fact, in the run up to the 2016 US Presidential election, there were allegations made nearly every day that the Russians were influencing the election by hacking into American databases and systems. And who can forget Julian Assange and his infamous WikiLeaks that successfully hacked into hundreds of thousands of emails, and whose actions may have kept Hillary Clinton out of the White House.

On May 31, 2014, in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha, Wisconsin, two 12-year-old girls attempted to stab their classmate to death. Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier’s violence was extreme, but what seemed even more frightening was that they committed their crime under the influence of a figure born by the internet: the so-called “Slenderman”. The grid is an accident of history and of culture, in no way intrinsic to how we produce, deliver and consume electrical power. Yet this is the system the United States ended up with, a jerry-built structure now so rickety and near collapse that a strong wind or a hot day can bring it to a grinding halt. The grid is now under threat from a new source: renewable and variable energy, which puts stress on its logics as much as its components.

Artificial intelligence does the seemingly impossible - driving cars, trading stocks, and teaching children. But facing the sea change that AI will bring can be paralyzing. How should companies set strategies, governments design policies, and people plan their lives for a world so different from what we know? In Prediction Machines, three eminent economists recast the rise of AI as a drop in the cost of prediction. With this single, masterful stroke, they lift the curtain on the AI-is-magic hype and show how basic tools from economics provide clarity about the AI revolution and a basis for action by CEOs, managers, policy makers, investors, and entrepreneurs.

Story
Run a Google search for “black girls” - what will you find? “Big Booty” and other sexually explicit terms are likely to come up as top search terms. But, if you type in “white girls”, the results are radically different. The suggested porn sites and un-moderated discussions about “why black women are so sassy” or “why black women are so angry” presents a disturbing portrait of black womanhood in modern society. In Algorithms of Oppression, Safiya Umoja Noble challenges the idea that search engines like Google offer an equal playing field for all forms of ideas, identities, and activities.

And a growing mountain of clinical research correlates screen tech with disorders like ADHD, addiction, anxiety, depression, increased aggression, and even psychosis.

Practical and Easy to Implement
If you don't know what search engines and social media apps actually sell, the answer is "you"! The book opened my eyes to how we pay for those "free" web searches and social posts. These companies are making billions from us and its easy to ignore, until something goes wrong. Then we're on our own. This audio version was a surprisingly good way to absorb some technical information and practical tips. I now feel empowered to protect my data and my identity.

Great Advice on Digital Privacy
Wow this audiobook opened my eyes! I knew that big organisations like google track our search results but I wasn't aware that so many platforms do this. What's more, they can do this with our behaviors which are off the platform. I think this topic is way under-discussed and should get more attention. The authors do a great job explaining how we can secure our digital privacy and that's why I can highly recommend this book.

Shocked
Shocked at how much of my data is being taken from me with my "unrealized" permission. This opened my eyes and now I know what to do moving forward to be safer. I'm taking precautions now.
I recommend this to anyone and everyone. This needs to be normalized to know who is taking what from you and selling it for profit.

Functional, Critical, Timely
It seems like every day I'm getting a new spam e-mail, and more recently spam texts to my personal number. All aspects of my personal data seem to have been sold out at one point or another, and I've been trying to find a way to lock down my personal data, or at least limit what info is being shared so that I can retain some level of privacy as we enter further into the digital age. Enter Digital Privacy: Internet Security to Stop Big Companies from Tracking and Selling Your Data, this book breaks down not methods for recovering and reclaiming sensitive data that has been shared, but effective and practical steps to prevent that data from ever being sold or used without your consent ever again.
The title works well as an audiobook, and the narrator is even toned and easy to listen to while engaged enough to hold the listener's attention. For anyone looking for a solid set of instructions for protecting and reclaiming your personal data/privacy, I would definitely give this title a listen!

Great book on digital privacy for the lay person
I'm in the industry and wanted a book to recommend for people who are not. This book fits the bill nicely. This book reminded me of one of Bruch Schneier's books, but without the copious amounts of technospeak. The author does a great job of explaining the ins and outs without confusing the listener. This book is not too long or too short; I think it is about the right length. If you are looking for an in-depth technical book, this isn't for you. But if you don't have a specialized technical certification and need help navigating the murky digital waters of online privacy, then you need this book.
Highly Recommended.

Protect your identity
I had no idea that the internet can be a place where your information can me sold. I like how the author gives practical advice and social media mistakes thank you can fix, programs you can put on your computer to make is harder for companies to get your info and how to conceal your identity. A month ago I even had my credit card use for fraudulent purchases! If only i had this book maybe I could have avoided that. This book is a great resource of information to help protect myself online and a must have for anyone
