Good, Not Great

Divergent definitely reminds me of The Hunger Games. It's not going to go down in history as a great piece of literature that generations of people will grow up reading and becoming a classic. It is a young adult book.

Because of that, one must go into it with a good bit of willingness to suspend disbelief. They do not explain what happened to society to leave it in this condition but I found that did not really matter much. In an adult book where there are several plot lines that are all interwoven, it would be expected. Because the target audience is younger, this story has one plot line and we follow it from beginning to end. (Well, the end of this particular episode.) It is a very simple and therefore, fairly predictable story but that doesn't mean it wasn't enjoyable.

If you are looking for a deep, meaningful novel with complex plot twists and character development, leave the young adult section. If you want a fast moving adventure story, give Divergent a try.

I finished it, listened to another book and now I have started the second book in the series so it did draw me back. I was curious to see where this was going. I hope it doesn't disappoint me in the end like Hunger Games did.

Love, Love, Love this book! It was a refreshing view of how the future could be. The characters are all strong and well written. The storyline is awesome! I found myself rooting for Tris every chance I got! I was sitting on the edge of my seat when it ended. Wondering which way it was going to go.

Can't wait to read the next installment!

The movie made more sense than the book.

Where does Divergent rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Not as well written as The Hunger Games.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The story elements are universal. The character's experiences in this faction based world can be applied to all walks of life.
Universal, but not quite symbolic.

What does Emma Galvin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Realism.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I can't stand it when books turn oo-ee gooey gushy, focusing on the chemical reactions and temperature of the girl's body due to physical attraction. The plot stops. Divergent does this a little.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed it for the most part. I listened to it after I saw the film. The film connected more dots together, where the book kept things a bit disconnected and seemingly less significant.

Very entertaining for a road trip

I listened to this while driving across country. It was performed well and the story was very captivating. I could picture everything happening as she described it. Will enjoy listening to the rest of the series.

Good start to a series

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. The story caught me and I listened to the whole thing within a day and a half.

What made the experience of listening to Divergent the most enjoyable?

The story is great, and the narrator did a great job. Overall, I found myself staying in the car to listen and immediately downloaded the next book in the series when it was over.

I loved the whole idea of the factions, each one representing a virtue. Dauntless is a really cool faction!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked Four. He is a strong character. He is usually calm, cool, and collected. He is stern, but can be sensitive and affectionate at times, too. He's tough, but not so tough that he's forgotten to be human.

What about Emma Galvin’s performance did you like?

She performed really well. She portrayed Tris' emotions really well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Oh, yes!!

Was much better than i expected at first. Great book. Looking forward to reading "Insurgent".

Enjoyable, fun, easy because of narrator

What made the experience of listening to Divergent the most enjoyable?

I think Emma Galvin does a terrific job narrating, I found her pleasant and easy to listen to.

I picked up this audio book due to the high ratings and that I saw a movie trailer recently. I have to say all in all I'm very satisfied. The one drawback is it does have periods of teeny-girl love story, which as I later found out from my wife, is likely the intended audience for this piece. So, I suppose that's on me for not knowing that ahead of time.

All of that being said it's well written and engaging outside of the silly lovesick girl portions.
