Audie Award Nominee, Solo Narration - Male, 2014

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special 12-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless - mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky 12-year-old Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the "steam" that children with the "shining" produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father's legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant "shining" power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes "Doctor Sleep."

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan's own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra's soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted fans of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Critic reviews

"Will Patton's delivery enhances King's prose in ways that make King's work so much more enjoyable in audio than just reading it…Patton's narrative voice captures the rhythm of King's words. His character voices, filled with a variety of regional American accents, remain consistent. Most importantly, the sinister aspects that embody characters and moments of this novel are superbly executed and will certainly leave listeners on edge." ( AudioFile)
"King, not one given to sequels, throws fans a big, bloody bone with this long-drooled-for follow-up to The Shining." ( Booklist)
"…a gripping, taut read that provides a satisfying conclusion to Danny Torrance's story." ( Publisher’s Weekly)

My favorite King novel so far!

Went into this not sure what to expect as a big fan of The Shining. I was pleasantly surprised and think anyone else who loves King’s work will be as well. Will Patton did an outstanding job as narrator, I think that’s part of what made me love it so much. I highly recommend this book to all Stephen King fans.

One of King's best!

I loved this book! It was an amazing book! I would definitely say it's one of King's best. It is a sequel to The Shinning but you can still understand everything even without reading the first one. Definitely a must read for anyone!

Anticlimactic!

predictable and the long buildup was for a lackluster resolve. OK, but not a top read.

Better than the Shinning?

I’ve got to say, to me yes. Danny embarks on a journey much more enthralling than that of his childhood at the Overlook.

The narrator…is brilliant. Stellar performance. This one is a must for a fan of Kings work.

Loved the Shinning? then Dr. Sleep will be a hit!

I've seen the title as I peruse King novels, but never stopped to read about what Doctor Sleep is about. When I learned its basically a sequel to the Shinning, it was my next book on Audible. Fantastic.

The audible performance was great in my opinion.
The Story was far beyond what I thought would be possible.

This might possible be the first book, I ever reread. Its just that good.

If you're a King fan. Doctor Sleep is sure to be a top 5 for you.

Enjoy

Excellent!

Don't miss this one! Will Patton is the BEST! Definitely a little weird at first, but hey - it IS Stephen King. But it all comes together and then you can't stop listening.

Best Sequel Ever

I was reluctant to read this sequel to one of my all time favorite books My son's rave reviews made me download it.Doctor Sleep is one of Kings best, a great story with great characters. It grabbed me from the beginning and never let go. Will Patton does another outstanding job narrating. He and King go together like peanut butter and jelly. If you have only one credit a month you can't go wrong on Doc Sleep

One of the most disturbing antagonists of Kings

Our once young buddy, now aged to current day, cannot remember the shining ability until something forces it. Just the thought of what the new antagonist(s) do to he and his types and the manner in which King presents it is EDGE OF YOUR SEAT and HORRIFIC! Could NOT put it down after half-way through. Will read this one again. -Choo
