My Fourth Try at an Audible Quixote

Well, I have to read this monster for a college class. Not that I don't want to read it for pleasure, but in this case it's especially important that the translator and narrator are as clear as possible. I have liked all of the beginnings of the unabridged versions available here, but I've kept spending credits hoping I'd get one that really knocked me out. This is the one. After a bit of cursory research, I found the Grossman translation highly recommended. And my own ears tell me that the Guidal narration is the best. This reading is four hours longer than most of the others, and it sounds so far like the extra time is well spent in helpful pauses. There is the added benefit for me that Grossman's translation is easily attainable in printed, annotated form so that I can dig up good notes for my paper after absorbing the audio a few times. I can't say I've listened to the whole of any of these, but if the first hour of four different versions can be trusted, I can easily call this one the best by far. Happy listening.

A classic if there ever was one

This is the sort of story that you enjoy on many levels. High or low.

A masterpiece

An absolute masterpiece with a great translation (I'm fluent in Spanish), and a great narrator.

Wonderfully Lovable Character

I forgot how funny Cervantes is. I liked the reader, great accents, not overly dramatic,
which I hate. I made it about 2/3 through. It does get slow at the end, for me. And I enjoy
hearing the classic episodes which are so much a part of our world as in the phrase
"tilting at windmills".

Humorous, witty writing. Obviously one of the masterpieces of classical literature. The performance is wonderful, as well.

The narrator is as good as I can imagine being possible. The story is wise and funny if requiring patience to get through

Really enjoyed this reading of a classic. The narrators performance added to my enjoyment, even though it took a while for my ear to become accustomed to the cadence and dialect

Entertaining, but long and sometimes tedious

I found the narrator particularly enjoyable and felt he well and truly brought life to the Knight of the Sorrowful Face.

There are many parts to this giant book that are funny and will keep you listening. There are, however, many more that while interesting, are not so enrapturing. It is indicative of its time, and to some degree, an excellent satire of the courtly tradition, but as such may not be well suited for the casual listener.

I work a job that enables me to listen to audio books throughout my day as I drive from one work site to the next. Catch 22, for comparison, was also a 50 hour book and I listened to it in just over a month. Don Quixote, on the other hand, took me 6 months because many times I found my mind wandering and had to stop listening due to disinterest only to try again later. I have two degrees in English and have been working my way through all the classics, many of which I neglected to read, if it were not for my drive to well and truly complete this quest, I would have stopped listening to Don Quixote half way through.

Still, if you can stick it out, it is a good book.
