Publisher's summary

The doughnut is a thing of beauty.
A circle of fried doughy perfection.
A source of comfort in trying times, perhaps.
For Theo Bernstein, however, it is far, far more.

Things have been going pretty badly for Theo Bernstein. An unfortunate accident at work has lost him his job (and his work involved a Very Very Large Hadron Collider, so he's unlikely to get it back). His wife has left him. And he doesn't have any money.

Before Theo has time to fully appreciate the pointlessness of his own miserable existence, news arrives that his good friend Professor Pieter van Goyen, renowned physicist and Nobel laureate, has died.

By leaving the apparently worthless contents of his safety deposit box to Theo, however, the professor has set him on a quest of epic proportions. A journey that will rewrite the laws of physics. A battle to save humanity itself.

This is the tale of a man who had nothing and gave it all up to find his destiny - and a doughnut.

Crappy Title. Amazing Read.

I almost didn't try this book out, but I'm glad I did. I get the author is trying to be funny, but the title was so boring I almost overlooked this book entirely. I'm about to buy book 2 though. This guy is the next Douglas Adams.

Good Book, but the audio seems out of order.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Hi,
I'm going to try and download the book again, I haven't finished the book yet but Part 2 seems to be jumping around to different sections and there is a 10 minute period that gets repeated.

Good book, excellent reader!

A fun book involving a great dose of science fiction that fans of Douglas Adams will thoroughly appreciate, though at the expense of a few moments where one must suspend disbelief and/or drink the Kool Aid. Have to say that Ray Sawyer is also now one of my favorite readers!

Damned with faint praise?

It took me less than 13 hours to listen to the whole story, but they were hours pleasant enough spent. Not disappointed, might even try another by Mr. Sawyer..... think it's cultural differences that were to blame - that of the reader ( me) not the author.

Wow

Simply said, this is something i could listen to forever. I found the Orc on the wild side and realised the book is connected to the donut series, which i had never heard off. Shame there are only three more books to listen to in the series. I haven’t laughed so hard in a ling time. Fantastic!

A fun world for scifantasy fans

Tom Holt has created a group of quixotic characters and a vast universe of world for them to play in. I really hope audible gets the portable door series as well. If you like Pratchett, Moore and the like you will enjoy this series as well.

Hitchhikers Guide meets Budapest Hotel

This is funny and so weird! The tone and language reminded me of the classic "A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" and Wes Anderson's movie "The Grand Budapest Hotel". I found myself enjoying going down the rabbit hole with Tom Holt. I had never heard/read anything by him and was pleasantly surprised by his style.
Great characters and interesting philosophy.

Bizarre and captivating

I had no idea what I was getting into, especially since I have never read anything by this author. It's such a fun captivating read! I would recommend it to anyone who wants a fast passed science based adventure.

A decent book. But drawn out unnecessarily

The book is read well, and it keeps your attention at the start. But about mid way through, its like a bad movie that has been unnecessarily extended with filler just to make it longer. The book has so much filler in the middle I was tempted to stop listening.

Fun Read

I enjoyed it for its uniqueness. It’s not very clear what it’s going to be about until things start getting chaotic. I was surprised. Gave me a little Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy feel and I love that book. 4.5/5
