Publisher's summary

Dragonfly Falling is the second book in the critically acclaimed epic fantasy series Shadows of the Apt by Adrian Tchaikovsky, author of the Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning Children of Time.

Every hero must be tested....

The Wasp Empire’s armies are on the move – and the city of Tark will be first to feel their might. Salma and Totho prepare for battle, alongside their Ant-kinden brethren. And within Tark’s walls, they’ll face a force greater than any Lowlander has ever seen. Stenwold Maker predicted this threat, and the Empire's secret service now deems him too dangerous to live. So he’s to be eliminated, and his beloved city of Collegium destroyed. For if this centre of learning is lost, it will crush Lowland resistance.

As the Empire's troops continue their relentless advance, their young Emperor pursues another, even darker goal. And his success would trigger a reign of blood lasting a thousand years.

Dragonfly Falling is followed by the third book in the Shadows of the Apt series, Blood of the Mantis.

Continues well, lots of war porn

I liked the continued opposition to the wasps by diplomatic and battleground means. The war was very bliw-by-blow, gizmo-by-gizmo, not gory but just a lot. But it’s pretty much a book about the stupidity of war, how it eats up people and ideas, and that’s very effective. Not sure where our heroes are headed next, but look forward to seeing more of the Greater Forces at work behind the scenes…

I'm completely speechless.

This has to be the best fictional war story in existence. If I had known this book would be THIS good I would have gotten through the first book quite a bit faster. I'm totally lost for words.

I love the characters of this world, the very realistic people who make realistic choices.

I loved this. It took a bit for me to adjust my expectations - to broaden them to encompass the sheer scope of this world at the brink of war. But I did, and it didn’t disappoint at any step. The performance was amazing, again, and listening was pure pleasure, all the time. I love Tchaikovsky’s work, and combined with the great performance, this was a wonderful listen.

Fantastic Steampunk Battle

As I catch up with the work, every book of Tchaikovsky further impresses me. There is so much about this story that is done masterfully, but the artificers, gadgets, and engines of war yield a warscape that is truly spectacular. The perfect narration and vivid imagination of this production make it a top 3 fantasy audiobook in my collection!

Couldn’t stop listening

I love the way Ben Allen brings these characters, and story, to life with his array of authentic British Isle voices and an odd American accent thrown in.

Having experienced some of Tchaikovsky‘s stories already, I knew I couldn’t predict what twists and turns the story would take, and after 40 years of reading sci-fi and fantasy, that’s a treat. When I first heard about this series, I didn’t pick them up immediately - with the idea of people with insect traits, but it’s more like different races and it’s really quite fascinating.

This book, and series in general, will appeal to fans of Sanderson, Jordan, McClellan, Hobb, Cherryh, Cherneda,Scalzi, Bujold.
