Publisher's summary

Gwendolen Ingolfsson, hurled into a parallel Earth filled with billions of unaltered, antique humans when the molehole experiment she was working on malfunctioned, is very clear where her duty lies. As a member of the Draka, genetically engineered to dominate crude, unmodified humans, her task is to build a molehole device in this universe and establish a bridgehead for the Race to come through. It had been some time since the Draka last had such an opportunity for conquest....

As for Detective-Lieutenant Henry Carmaggio, he'd seen plenty of blood, both in Cambodia and in 20 years of police work. But he'd never seen anything like this. Something was loose in his city, something inhuman that walked among us, killing with the easy precision of a leopard in a flock of sheep. And unless he could track it down it would kill and kill again - until the whole world was its hunting ground.

Domination in a parallel Earth

S M Stirling’s Drakon is the fourth installment in his Domination series which is an alternative history with a master race group that came to dominate Earth and force the rest of humanity to emigrate to the stars. This offering takes place hundreds of years into the future where the Domination has given themselves immortality and succeeded in engineering genetic differences with non-Domination humans. An experiment into faster than light travel leads to perturbed time travel and a Domination agent ends up on a parallel Earth in approximately our timeframe, but without the Domination. She succeeds in amassing resources to build the machine gate back to her world with the intention of enslaving this Earth. A Samothrace agent arrives to stop her, while a New York cop is pursuing leads that point to her as the perpetrator of various crimes.

Stirling clearly got bored with Drakas after book three and went in a completely different direction. The action is engaging as are the police procedural aspects. Things just seem a bit too easy for a Draka and the likelihood that Earth circa 2000 could support research activities derived from 500 years in the future seemed forced.

The narration is excellent with solid character distinction. Pacing is smooth and brisk.

Drakon

Loved it right up till the end then I hated it. Not the ending I hoped to see play out and if there were an alternate ending version I'd buy it.
