Publisher's summary
Twice Claire has used an ancient stone circle to travel back to the 18th century. The first time she found love with a Scottish warrior but had to return to the 1940s to save their unborn child. The second time, 20 years later, she reunited with her lost love but had to leave behind the daughter that he would never see. Now Brianna, from her 1960s vantage point, has found a disturbing obituary and will risk everything in an attempt to change history.
Davina Porter's narrative talent adds a special vibrance and resonance to Gabaldon's complex, colorful characters.

The DFZ, the metropolis formerly known as Detroit, is the world’s most magical city with a population of nine million and zero public safety laws. That’s a lot of mages, cybernetically enhanced chrome heads, and mythical beasties who die, get into debt, and otherwise fail to pay their rent. When they can’t pay their bills, their stuff gets sold to the highest bidder. That’s when they call me. I’m a Cleaner: a freelance mage employed by the DFZ to sort through the mountains of magical junk people leave behind. It’s not a pretty job, or a safe one....

Judith Hampton was as beautiful as she was proud and loyal. Her dear Scottish friend from childhood was about to give birth, and Judith had promised to be at her side. But there was another reason for the journey from her bleak English home to the Highlands: to meet the father she had never known, the Laird Maclean. Nothing prepared her, however, for the sight of the Scottish barbarian who was to escort her into his land...Iain Maitland, laird of his clan, a man more powerfully compelling than any she had ever encountered.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Exceptional Listening Experience!
I had originally planned to read the hardcopy of this book as I had the others and savor the luxury of turning the pages, but time has not allowed it. I feared a narrator could not adequately capture the essence of this series but Davina Porter more than captured the characters and the magic of the book!

A cautious approval
The first book in this series was excellent, this less so. While this author focusses on complex character development, and this is one of her strengths, in this book there are a few exasperating instances in which the characters behave so irrationally obtuse that the only conclusion the reader can come to is that the author had written herself into a corner, dramatically speaking, and the only way to further the plot was to have these likeable, rational people act like juveniles.
There are parts where I almost stopped reading the book because of these irritating lapses but the authors descriptive prose and attention to the details of the mechanics of everyday life in this universe generally kept me interested.
I hope the series maintains its high standard of writing and doesn't degenerate into formulaic, bodice ripping, romantic fallacy.
Here's hoping the writer gets a second wind.
The reader is quite amazing. Her ability to switch voices for each character and make them believable with discreet accents and pitch is remarkable and helps with visualizing each character uniquely.
