NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family—and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

Featured Article: The Most Stellar Sci-Fi Authors of All Time

Science fiction is a genre as diverse as you can imagine. There are stories that take place in deep space, often depicting teams exploring or running away from something; stories that focus on life at the most cellular level, such as a pandemic tale; and stories that take place in times that feel similar to our own. Depicting themes of existentialism, philosophy, hubris, and personal and historical trauma, sci-fi has a cadre of topics and moods.

Great Book and Performances but...

The "but" is that different actors with very different voices would play the same character (epecially the barron) in different parts of the the book. Confusing, but overall an entertaining listen.

Herbert's classic, but with some minor flaws

This review is based primarily on the audiobook itself and not a commentary on the plot or writing of Dune. Overall I thought this was a very good adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic to audiobook format. The voice actors are well cast for the most part and do a fine performance. My only complaint is with the lack of consistency: For some reason it bounces back and forth between the voice actors and the narrator doing the voices himself for many of the characters, which definitely detracts from the experience.

Why the wind?

Everything was great except the wind! For me, the wind was a nuisance, and became really annoying and throughout the book, and ultimately served no purpose…

Great dramatic performance

It was a great dramatic retelling. But it did skip whole pages and paragraphs at times so if you’re trying to listen and read at once, it’s not a perfect verbal translation

the pacing was excellent.

could have used more women reading parts for the female characters. it was off putting hearing the main reader as a female.

Intriguing book

Enjoyed it very much, from the trilogy books before I wasn’t used to the multiple voices, but still enjoyed the book a lot.

Excellent performance

No cost was spared creating an audio play of the book by Frank Herbert. Multiple actors and key sound effects. Highly absorbing.

Great Sci Fi novel

I know it must've been said before, but this book truly feels like Dune of Sci-Fi as Lord of the Ring of Fantasy novel. The intricate details of the settings, cultures, and people that was written are at another level. It can be daunting to start as there are so many new terminology, and an alternative universe we're learning. I'll be honest, I started reading the book twice before finally plow through the initial few chapters. Deep learning curve so to speak, but once past beyond that, it was just a fantastic read that I couldn't stop. I did feel like the author was rushing at the ending a little, but so glad to find out there are several sequels. I can't wait to start reading those as well.

Great albeit inconsistent voicing

Time honored classic sci fi, with only somewhat inconsistent voicing (narrator voices Jessica sometimes, sometimes she's voiced by others. I'd go into the story but it's been done endlessly.
