About this listen

Brighton McKenzie inherited one of the last pieces of farmland in suburban Baltimore. It has been in his family since Maryland was a colony, though it has been fallow for years. Selling it for development would be easy, but Brighton wants to honor his grandfather's wishes and work it again. Unfortunately, an accident left him relying on a cane, so he'll need help. Tanner Houghton used to work on a ranch in Montana until a vengeful ex got him fired because of his sexuality. He comes to Maryland at the invitation of his cousin and is thrilled to have a chance to get back to the kind of work he loves.

Brighton is instantly drawn to the intensely handsome and huge Tanner - he's everything Brighton likes in a man, though he holds back because Tanner is an employee, and because he can't understand why a man as virile as Tanner would be interested in him. But that isn't the worst of their problems. They have to face the machinations of Brighton's aunt, Tanner's ex suddenly wanting him back, and the need to find a way to make the farm financially viable before they lose Brighton's family legacy.

A farm in the City and it works.

Brighton inherits his grandpa's farm. It is different from most farms as it is surrounded by a growing city. He knows nothing about farming and doesn't understand why his grandfather let it to him. His Aunt and her kids are angry and try to fight him every inch o the way. He has recently survived a bad wreck and has trouble walking. His lawyer recommends his nephew as a hired hand and Brighton interviews him. Tanner has a bad lisp and low self-image just being kicked off the ranch he had been working and shunned by his rich so-called boyfriend.
Once again Andrew Grey brings together two broken men and makes them whole. The story is sweet and sexy.
I listened to the audio version and love how Derrick McClain brings both of these men alive and kept me engaged in the story. I listened in one afternoon.

Amazing story!!

What made the experience of listening to Eastern Cowboy the most enjoyable?

The narrator did a great job telling this story. He made it a very easy listen and really brought the characters to life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Eastern Cowboy?

Any time Brighton told Tanner he perfect even with his stutter. It showed true emotion and really kind of hit home for me because I used to have a stutter. Tanner was kind person and people didn't see that because of his speech impediment.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene where Brighton and Tanner we talking about the farm and Brighton said it was "our farm".

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could, I would have listened to this in one sitting. I usually listen to audio books to/from work but this one was on play for my most of my work day!

if you like slow, tedious and boring charaters

So. I did not enjoy this book and would not recommend it. The performance is slow and monotone. I cannot tell you how many time I just plain feel asleep.

Both characters are tedious and boring.

There is one sex scene that verges on interesting. But really it's not worth the credit.

One of Grey's Best.

I can't say that I've read too many of Grey's books - most of the books' summaries just don't grab my "I have to read this" attention, but I do keep the author in mind when looking for new stuff. The first book I picked up from this author was "Love Comes Silently," which is a good book if you overlook a horrible narrator and vanishing characters. But that's neither here nor there for this review.

"Eastern Cowboy" really came together for me - nothing felt forced, the characters made me care about them, and the plot had an eastern twist, which was different from everything else I've read about cowboys. Andrew Grey is a great world/character builder, but so far there's always been something missing, something important that doesn't get resolved, important side characters that fade away, etc... This time there's none of that; it's a well written, complete story. I definitely recommend this book, especially the audio - Derrick McClain does a fantastic job! (Unlike Max Lehnen - Sorry, a little "Love Comes Silently" bitterness, but still a good book... in text form. Sigh.)

Narrator was divine, story was predictable

No surprises here, it was sweet and incredibly heavy handed at parts. Derrick lent good quality to the story that probably lacked in print. I was entertained enough to finish it but I won’t be listening to it again. Just ok.

Overall Great Story

The best part hands down is the narration. Andrew was able to make the different characters' voices really sing.

Disappointing

I struggled to finish this book. It started out ok, but then became very monotone and predictable. :(
