Publisher's summary
Recently orphaned, young Rose Campbell is sent to the "Aunt Hill", where Uncle Alex, her six aunts, and seven boy cousins live in noisy confusion. It is nothing like the quiet girls’ boarding school that has been Rose’s home for the past year. Surrounded by a bewildering array of pets, relatives, and unfamiliar foods, the fragile girl wonders if she will ever get used to this new life. Fortunately, Uncle Alex is her guardian. He keeps the aunts from coddling her too much, and makes sure that she has plenty of time to play outside with her cousins.
Day by day, learning how to care for each of these people, Rose begins to bloom. Eight Cousins is a charming introduction to Louisa May Alcott’s timeless classics, which include Little Women and Little Men. Barbara Caruso’s colorful narration perfectly captures Rose and her extended family.

A country girl named Polly is visiting city friends and comes to realize that this world is quite different than which she has left. Here people are judged according to their dress and manner of speech rather than for their honesty and hard work. A member of the landed gentry, with a seemingly guaranteed income from his estate in the country, Oblomov lives in Petersburg, uninterested in the business that provides his living and barely aware that the revenue is diminishing. Not that he leads a dissolute life of extravagance, balls and entertainment. Instead he is a dreamer, a sybarite, content above all to spend most of the day supine, in bed. The novel opens with Oblomov thus ensconced, attended only by his dirty, grumbling, indolent servant Zahar, who has looked after him since childhood, catering to his every need.

Story
Immediately following the success of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott sat down to write An-Old Fashioned Girl, expanding on the subject of rich versus poor that she explored in her first novel. It’s a story of a country mouse and a city mouse: 14-year-old Polly Milton travels to Boston for a stay with her friend Fanny Shaw. The wealthy Shaws’ way of life is foreign to Polly who tries to adapt but is quickly labeled “old-fashioned”. Fanny and her friends dress and behave as their elders do, flirting with boys and gossiping.

No one would accuse 11-year-old Caddie Woodlawn of being dainty and ladylike. In spite of her mother’s best efforts, Caddie is as wild as the wind, playing freely and rambunctiously with her two brothers in the Wisconsin backwoods. There are rafts to build and trees to climb and pranks to play. Caddie especially likes to watch her friend Indian John build birchbark canoes at the river. Every day seems wide with possibility - as wide as the frontier. But living on the edge of civilization has its risks, too....

Coke and Pepsi McDonald didn’t want to jump off a cliff. They didn't want to get hit by poisoned darts from blowguns either. And they certainly don't want to get locked in their burning school, thrown into a pit at the top of a sand dune, or drowned in a vat of liquefied Spam. But what are you supposed to do when you’re being chased across the country by your insane health teacher and two guys in bowler hats who are trying to kill you? One thing's for sure, it'll be a snap for Coke and Pep to write their essays on "How I Spent My Summer Vacation."

Better than I remembered!
If you could sum up Eight Cousins in three words, what would they be?
Full of heart
What was one of the most memorable moments of Eight Cousins?
When they go to the mountains and find an outdoor way of life marvelous.
Have you listened to any of Barbara Caruso’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is my 1st book by Barbara Caruso. There were multiple times while listening in public that I had to choke back a sob or blink away a tear. She is excellent.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Uncle Alex's love for his orphaned niece.
Any additional comments?
It is wholesome. No swearing, sex or violence. No taking the Lord's name in vain. Just people being interesting in their thoughts. I think this could be enjoyed by boys and girls.

Genuinely Charming and Gentle Story
This is a charming and rather gentle story of an orphan that comes to lives in a big house with her two maiden aunts and her guardian uncle. Her uncle is a physician and sets about getting her healthy in a practical and wholesome way.
In this small community, she has other Aunts with boy sons, and all together they are "The Eight Cousins." There are small adventures and she sets about learning womanly skills as well as some more progressive skills for her time. There isn't a "big plot" as much as this is the story of Rose finding her place in the family.
The book's performance is more of a "reading" than a performance. There is no special effort to differentiate between male and female voices. It's well done, though, and seems very appropriate. It's a very low-stress listen. I played it for my daughter as a bedtime story, we listened to a chapter or two each evening, it was very enjoyable.

A glimpse of time and place
The language here reflects the time, place, social roles, and authors' beliefs. Some parts now seem eye rolling: discussions of cousins marrying, lower classes seen as "other", brief immigrant bashing. It's not horrible, or continuous: I just noted it, saw it as sign of different time, noted the distance we've come... and moved on.
AND the brief bashing was following kindness to and care of family and community that is prevalent among the characters.

A childhood classic that still holds it's charm!
I was so happy to find this gem. The story is a scoach dated. But I love it all the more for the memories those words brought back.
