Publisher's summary

Terrorist attacks. Natural disasters. Domestic crackdowns. Economic collapse. Riots. Wars. Disease. Starvation. What can you do when it all hits the fan? You can learn to be self-sufficient and survive without the system.

"I've started to look at the world through apocalypse eyes."

So begins Neil Strauss's harrowing new book: his first full-length work since the international best seller The Game, and one of the most original-and provocative-narratives of the year. After the last few years of violence and terror, of ethnic and religious hatred, of tsunamis and hurricanes - and now of world financial meltdown - Strauss, like most of his generation, came to the sobering realization that, even in America, anything can happen. But rather than watch helplessly, he decided to do something about it. And so he spent three years traveling through a country that's lost its sense of safety, equipping himself with the tools necessary to save himself and his loved ones from an uncertain future.

With the same quick wit and eye for cultural trends that marked The Game, The Dirt, and How to Make Love Like a Porn Star, Emergency traces Neil's white-knuckled journey through today's heart of darkness, as he sets out to move his life offshore, test his skills in the wild, and remake himself as a gun-toting, plane-flying, government-defying survivor. It's a tale of paranoid fantasies and crippling doubts, of shady lawyers and dangerous cult leaders, of billionaire gun nuts and survivalist superheroes, of weirdos, heroes, and ordinary citizens going off the grid. It's one man's story of a dangerous world - and how to stay alive in it. Before the next disaster strikes, you're going to want to read this book. And you'll want to do everything it suggests. Because tomorrow doesn't come with a guarantee...

interesting, but a bit too heavy on gory detail

First half of this book is quite interesting to hear about all the survival junkies that Neil Strauss hooks up with. Second half is more focused on Strauss's experience trying to become one of them and all of the trials/tribulations of trying to live post-apocalypse. Still, at only 8 hours or so a quick listen that'll probably teach you a thing or two.

Good book - but don't bye a goat!

Just buy the book and enjoy a journey into another world - a world that most people can learn something from. But don't buy a goat!

Strauss Delivers Again

I enjoy Neil Strauss’ work, and once again he captured me into his world. This audio book touched on many concerns that the modern life causes us not to think about - much appreciated. Also really enjoy that he narrates his audiobooks.

One of my all time favorites

Amazing book that I couldn't get enough of and I didn't want to end. This is one of the best books of my life! If you're an outdoors person, even a weekend warrior like myself you'll love this book. The story is extremely well told. I wish I had the vocabulary to write the review I'd like to give this work.

Really Enjoyed This

I really like Neil's work. When he embarks upon a project he throws himself at it hard and is then very candid about the results.

I've read The Game, which was interesting. And now this Emergency book.

There is no reference to his other work, this is just his experience growing as a person and preparing himself for bad things happening.

Although I am not a prepper, I don't have a bug out bag, and am really not prepared for a global catastrophe, and am not planning on readying for such event, I still find the personal journey described in this book fascinating and an enjoyable read. The author takes us on a journey that has a beginning, middle, and end.

The book was well written, and well narrated by the author.

I think if you are of a prepper persuasion, you'll find the story interesting. But even if you're not, I still think this is fun stuff to read about.

Enjoyed This Book

I was introduced to Neil's work by a podcast on the Tim Ferris show and I've read 2 book by Mr. Straus. I've liked them both because I just like the way he writes. In find his books interesting, funny, warm and I especially like his honesty in how he views the world.

The lonely thing I wish is that the chapters had titles! Like what is up with that?

Beyond excellent

Informative and entertaining. Dramatic and poignant moments, insights into daily life in modern society, and lighter comedic episodes combined for a memorable listen.

A gold mine of information and proper mindset

While interesting the first half of the book isn't too particularly useful in pratical knowledge. I admittedly almost dropped it is it wasn't for what I already knew about Niel. That said from about chapter 30 onward is everything I wanted from a prepper mindset. Everything from where to go to get certain types of training to materials and the gritty and unpleasant experience of putting what he learned into practice as sunshine who was completely new to the experience. It's especially useful because like Niel, I also want to use this knowledge up help my community.
