Emma's Rose: A Zombie Tale - Book 1: The Cave

In an ancient cave in Romania....

Wealthy philanthropist Arthur Wells, in need of a family getaway with his wife, Joan, and his daughter, Emma, arranges a trip to Romania. His intention is to explore an ancient cave system he read about, located in Constanta, on the Black Sea coast.

The name of the cave, unearthed in 1986, is Pestera Movile. It has been sealed from the light of day for over five-and-a-half million years, preserved beneath more than 20 meters of clay. Yet, despite the toxic environment and the lack of light and oxygen within, life forms thrive - all of them blind and colorless. Many are carnivorous. Most are found nowhere else on Earth.

In this harsh, chemosynthetic environment, Arthur stumbles across something he hopes will advance medical science. Unbeknownst to his guide, he takes a sample of the strange flower.

Arthur Wells has no way of knowing what Emma's Rose is about to unleash upon the world.

A different spin on zombies

I know I might sound like broken record with high praise of Mr. Shelman but he is an outstanding writer and when he narrates his own books, well, that just takes any book over the top in my opinion. Emma's Rose takes you to places unimaginable with deep secrets that should have stayed just that......secret. What is unleashed from a pretty little Rose is deadly. Happy to go on any ride Mr. Shelman takes me and Emma's Rose is no exception. Why not enjoy his latest while he tells it like no one else could. Eric A Shelman always adds a twist to all of his books, things you don't see in other books and he nails it with Emma's Rose.

Don’t Be a Dumb Tourist

The story line was fresh and the main character was easy to like as were the rest of his cohorts. An attempt was made to add humor to the horror through some of the characters. Must admit that toward the end it all became something to just finish. Still, I really liked the premise.

Emma's Rose: The Cave review

The title on this book threw me off - for quite a while in fact. It was continually popping up in my Amazon book suggestions, and while I am a huge fan of anything I have ever read by Mr. Shelman - this one just gave me a "meh" feeling. The cover art, the title about a ROSE?

Ok, so here's where I'm going to start my review. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID !! Don't pass it by because there's a flower on the cover - look closely at the creepy albino bug with nasty little pincers, circling itself in the middle where the yellow dust is sitting......

Recently, I made up a saying that sums up my mistake . "Don't judge a book by its cover". heheh ok, maybe I can't take credit for that, but it fits perfectly in my case :)

This is, without a shadow of a doubt, a zombie book. A really good zombie book!
The cause for the outbreak is unique. The cast of characters are flawed, funny, endearing. The zombies have a different twist to the same old stumblers. And the ending leaves room for continuing the story, without and major cliffhanger (I didn't say "no cliffhanger " just nothing major lol)

The narrating by Mr. Shelman is spot on as usual. I really like that he reads his own books - the characters come to life in the way they were meant to.

Another Awesome Book

What did you love best about Emma's Rose?

The characters are well developed. The story line is original and the way the plague spreads is unique.

What other book might you compare Emma's Rose to and why?

Its hard for me to compare it to others because of the unique style and way the zombies started.

Which character – as performed by Eric A. Shelman – was your favorite?

Honestly all of them but Emma herself really really sticks out in my mind. For a adult male to be able to nail the inflections that Shelman does is great.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES I would have but work got in the way.

Any additional comments?

Imagine an organism that is able to destroy the world as we know it. A creature so destructive that God buried it way underground, lost to the world in order to protect it. Now imagine that this creature is released. That’s exactly what happens when philanthropist Arthur Wells decides to take his family to Romania for a getaway. Arthur bribes the Romanian authorities to allow him to explore a cave that very few have been in. He had a couple rules and he did not follow them…….Now Hell has been unleashed on earth. Enter the “Zombies”. These zombies are not your average brain eaters. They will eat every bit of you. Then you don’t even get to die in peace. You will also reanimate even if you’re half eaten.

I really enjoyed this book. It easily earned a five star review from me. Eric makes all the characters so relatable that you want to just keep reading. The suspense is not over the top but still keeps you guessing what will happen next. If you like zombie stories, or simply like reading about man’s struggle to survive then you will love this book. When Eric narrates his own books the characters come to life in a way that you never expected. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to book 2

Worst Book Ever

Worst. Book. Ever. And to think I wasted an Audible credit on it! I value my time more than my money, but both were wasted on this slop. Even if you have both to spare or splurge, avoid this.

So this multi millionaire/billionaire decides to buy his way to explore a newly discovered cave in Romania and sneak out a specimen, unleasing a deadly virus to most of the population. Oh, he also took water. But without testing, we KNOW it's the centipede who is the mastermind culprit of this apocalypse. He transports it back to the US, shares it with his family. Because customs rules and regulations don't include him.
The media picks up the "Emma's Rose" name, but it takes a while for them to determine WHO named it, yet they know who Patient Zero/One is. He walks (or runs, rather) around with the specimens. He tells EVERYONE who will listen his sob story (it infected his wife and daughter) and admits his wrongdoing. NO ONE blames him or tries to beat the shyt out of him, although everyone is dying and in fear of their lives.
If he is so remorseful, stay da fuk still and get tested and find out WHY you are immune, you moron.
This infection supposedly has an eight hour incubation, yet the world is infected ... imagine: Romania to any place is less than eight hours .... because planes aren't falling out of the skies from the dead coming to life ...
So many plot holes and unrealistic reactions and reasonings qualify this to be a brain dead reader's pick of the week. It's baffling how a series could be spun off or forwarded with the thinly threaded ideology.

I found no redeeming qualities of the book nor plot. Enjoy the book description and I promise your imagination could put the actual story to shame.

I am totally turned off by this author and appalled by the high rankings of the book and audiobook.
