About this listen

When Bob Tarte bought a house in rural Michigan, he was counting on a tranquil haven. Then Bob married Linda. She wanted a rabbit, which seemed innocuous enough until the bunny chewed through their electrical wiring. And that was just the beginning. Before long, Bob found himself constructing cages, buying feed, clearing duck waste, and spoon-feeding a menagerie of furry and feathery residents. His life of quiet serenity vanished, and he unwittingly became a servant to a relentlessly demanding family. "They dumbfounded him, controlled and teased him, took their share of his flesh, stole his heart" (Kirkus Reviews).

Whether commiserating with Bob over the fate of those who are slaves to their animals or regarding his story as a cautionary tale about the rigors of animal ownership, listeners on both sides of the fence have found Tarte's story of his chaotic squawking household irresistible - and irresistibly funny.

Critic reviews

"Great fun, thanks to the author's sly sense of humor and willingness to poke good-natured fun at himself, his wife, and their menagerie...Readers will chuckle at the situations presented, and pet owners will no doubt identify with them." ( School Library Journal)

Geese are the Best

A funny, yet poignant portrait of life with bunnies, parakeets, parrots, ducks, geese, turkeys, and more. Stephen Thorne delivers another stellar performance filled with impeccable timing, inflection, and restraint.

Funny, funny, funny.

I loved this book. Being small zoo (or ark as my husband calls it), owner of a variety of ducks, chickens and other animals that come into my life, it was so obvious this book was written by someone who has experienced the draw of just one more because I don't have any.
I found myself giggling out loud as I could relate to his amazement as he learned their animals personalities and how he could fit it all into his life. Just a book that made me smile through the entire book as the narrator created a life's story of a couple who loved animals and found it hard to say no. It felt like it was his own personal story.

Fantastic book!

I absolutely adore this book, well written and well narrated. Highly recommend to any animal lovers (or your average Joe who wants a peak into the crazy life some of us animal lovers chose!)

Waste of time.

I understand books can be slow sometimes but dang. I even like adorable books even if not much is happening. But I got so tired of this. Over half way through I had to get another book because it didn’t give me the distraction I needed.
