Don’t miss the eagerly anticipated epic new fantasy from Christopher Paolini—Murtagh, coming 11.7.23!

A new adventure hatches in Book One of the Inheritance Cycle, perfect for fans of Lord of the Rings! This New York Times bestselling series has sold over 40 million copies and is an international fantasy sensation.

"Christopher Paolini is a true rarity."—The Washington Post

When fifteen-year-old Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Overnight his simple life is shattered, and, gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a dangerous tapestry of magic, glory, and power. Now his choices could save—or destroy—the Empire.

Critic reviews

"It's an impressive start to a writing career that's sure to flourish." (Booklist)

"Doyle's range of accents is perfect for the multiple characters of this epic....On paper Eragon is a sprawling fantasy, filled with obvious nods to Tolkien and too many convenient plot devices. But on audio, it fills the ears with vivid characters, witty dialogue, and nail-biting battle scenes set in a magical world where a beautiful blue dragon and her rider are at the noble center of it all." "An impressive epic fantasy." (Publishers Weekly)

An ok introduction to a great story

I'm actually not that big a fan of Gerard Doyles performance. I think he talks way too fast, so I had to have the speed on 85% the whole book.

The book in itself is an ok introduction to an otherwise great series, but it shows that Paolini was only 15 when he wrote it. It is full of tropes everyone who has ever read a fantasy book has seen before.

It was a bit difficult to get into, but after a while I started to really enjoy it.

My favorite fantasy.

has one I picked up these books when they were publishing paper I had no issue tearing through chapter after chapter.I appreciate the range of voices the reader was able to produce but they have some very cast would lead to a richer story. nevertheless, I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the Inheritance series.

Brought the book to life!

Gerard Doyle should have been cast for every role in the movie adaptation! A must for any library!

A satisfying tale from a wonderful imaginary world

This story draws the reader in from the very beginning. It is both easy to read and beautifully written. I was completely immersed in a world of Dragons, Riders, Elves and Dwarfs from start to finish. As satisfying as LOR. Absolutely loved it.

the dragon voice

The book is amazing, the authors voice soothing, the dragon's voice irritating. when the line for saphiria's voice was played it broke the trance I was in when listening to author read. when I think of her talking, I could see a beautiful soft, yet strong and prideful woman's voice. but instead she had a monsters harsh voice. best of luck

I read the book when it was first release, and listening to it again was just as enjoyable.

A fun ride

Just a well rounded, simple, fun ride. The author was 17 at the time so it shows -- a little. Nonetheless, it's a great book to pass time behind the wheel. The narrator does a truly excellent job bringing the book to life.

A spell binding book of unimaginable quality.

It has been to long since I have read a book like this. Brilliantly written and told in an absolutely wonderfully imaginative fashion that has left me starving to read the next book in the series. This story was perfect in all the ways that matter most to make a perfect book. I recommend this book very highly.
