Don’t miss the eagerly anticipated epic new fantasy from Christopher Paolini—Murtagh, coming 11.7.23!

A new adventure hatches in Book One of the Inheritance Cycle, perfect for fans of Lord of the Rings! This New York Times bestselling series has sold over 40 million copies and is an international fantasy sensation.

"Christopher Paolini is a true rarity."—The Washington Post

When fifteen-year-old Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Overnight his simple life is shattered, and, gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a dangerous tapestry of magic, glory, and power. Now his choices could save—or destroy—the Empire.

Critic reviews

"It's an impressive start to a writing career that's sure to flourish." (Booklist)

"Doyle's range of accents is perfect for the multiple characters of this epic....On paper Eragon is a sprawling fantasy, filled with obvious nods to Tolkien and too many convenient plot devices. But on audio, it fills the ears with vivid characters, witty dialogue, and nail-biting battle scenes set in a magical world where a beautiful blue dragon and her rider are at the noble center of it all." (AudioFile)

"An impressive epic fantasy." (Publishers Weekly)

What a Beginning of a fun Journey

I am a fairly novice reader, but very much enjoy fantasy stories with elves, dwarfs, and dragons. I really enjoyed this book and the coming of age story it began. I think the Doyle did a wonderful job with painting the mood and helping you dive into the story! I listen on my commutes to and from work and I didn't want to turn it off. I was fully engaged and was excited to continue with the next book Eldest! I know people claim elements are taken from other series but that didn't bother me. I was fully engaged and am about to start the 3rd book. I can't wait to see how the story continues!

A Great Dragon Story

I remember as a kid I couldn't read this book because of my dyslexia, as a teen I was told it was for kids, and now as an adult I can listen to whatever book I want. I'm happy to finally cross this book of of my to read list after so many years. the story is great, I enjoy all the internal conflicts Eragon struggles with, and how it mixes with the external conflict through the story. Safira was definitely my favorite character, her comments are always funny or just put the arrogant Eragon in his place. the world building is beautiful, my only struggle was with keeping up with the location names. Thankfully you can easily find the map with a Google search. All around, I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys high fantasy. I plan on listening to the other books in the series to learn more of this world's mysteries.

The depth

I’ve read and listened to this story more times then I can count, though if I had to guess I’d say at least 10 by now, and love it every time. The is a depth and richness to it, as well as an understanding that Chris knows what he is talking about

I think what stood out was when Brom showed Erogon who and what he was at the end of his life.

This is a very highly recomended book! My brother and I love it. Every part of me gets excited when I hear that deep voice of Sifera talking to Eragon. I can’t say anything more except that it gets you sucked in. makes me want to keep reading for hours and hours and hours this entertaining exciting book.

Voice of the dragon

Some of the monster voices sounded like muppets, not bad just different enough to pull back the mystery and wonder of the story and make you remember it’s not real.
