Publisher's summary
Where do you go when nowhere is safe?
Sixteen years after a deadly virus wiped out most of Earth’s population, the world is a perilous place. Eighteen-year-old Eve has never been beyond the heavily guarded perimeter of her school, where she and two hundred other orphaned girls have been promised a future as the teachers and artists of the New America. But the night before graduation, Eve learns the shocking truth about her school’s real purpose - and the horrifying fate that awaits her.
Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Arden, her former rival from school, and Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust... and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.
In this epic new series, Anna Carey imagines a future that is both beautiful and terrifying. Readers will revel in Eve’s timeless story of forbidden love and extraordinary adventure.

The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials - engineered organic beings identical to humans - has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.

Since she’d been on the outside, she’d survived an Aether storm, she’d had a knife held to her throat, and she’d seen men murdered. This was worse. Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland - known as The Death Shop - are slim. If the cannibals don’t get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She’s been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

On the first day, no one really noticed. All those babies wrapped in blue blankets - not a pink one in sight. On the third day, people were scared - a statistic-defying abundance of blue. Not just entire hospitals, not only entire countries, but the entire world. Boys. Only boys. Until Eve. The only girl born in 50 years. The savior of mankind. Kept protected, towering above a ruined world under a glass dome of safety until she is ready to renew the human race. But when the time comes to find a suitor...Eve doesn't only want safety and protection. She wants freedom.

The living dead are more alive than ever! Zombies have become more than an iconic monster for the 21st century: They are now a phenomenon constantly revealing as much about ourselves - and our fascination with death, resurrection, and survival - as our love for the supernatural or post-apocalyptic speculation. Our most imaginative literary minds have been devoured by these incredible creatures and produced exciting, insightful, and unflinching new works of zombie fiction.

Story
There came an elastic aftershock of creaks and groans and then, softly softly, a chinking shower of rubbled cement. Leaves calmed and trunks stood serene. Where, not a minute before, there had been a suburb, there was now only woodland standing amid ruins. There is no warning. No chance to prepare. They arrive in the night: thundering up through the ground, transforming streets and towns into shadowy forest. Buildings are destroyed.

This Is A Great Book!!!
Would you consider the audio edition of Eve to be better than the print version?
Yes, only if you like to sit or lay down and imagine the book while its read to you!!!
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the genre of the book and some of it was actually funny!
Have you listened to any of Tavia Gilbert’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but she did a wonderful job!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I laughed soo hard, a little boy first thought to be a girl loved to wear a 'tutu'!
Any additional comments?
This book was written very well and was packed full of adventure. I only have 1 complaint.... The main character 'Eve' was a very dumb character. She is like the girl in the movie Twighlight. They make the dumbest choices that skrew over everyone else around them. You just want to give them a wakeup slap and tell them not to be soo stupid!

Starting next book NOW!
I am so glad the next book is already out so I can jump right into it. Tavia Gilbert did a woderful job with narration. (Narration needs to be good to keep me involved.) Anna Carey did an excellent job with this book/audiobook! The pace was smooth and never slowed or got dull. She kept my attention throughout the story. Quick overview: Eve, who is now eighteen, has been living at a school with other orphaned girls after loosing her mother to a plague. On the eve of her graduation from school she finds out the horrifying truth about the future that awaits them all. Forced to escape alone and nowhere to go, Eve runs looking for a place to survive. Been taught to fear everything and trust no one past the school gates, she must lean on the inner strength she never knew she had and push through her fears and lack of trust in order to survive.

Problematic lead keeps getting in the way
What did you like best about Eve? What did you like least?
Carey built up an interesting world that I'd like to learn more about. The post plague politics and resistance are intriguing elements that don't get a lot of coverage in this first book of the series. Unfortunately, the point of entry is Eve, a character who refuses to take charge of her own agency at any point. She along with all the other young women left have been incredibly sheltered, but it irritates me no end that Eve seems intent on ceding all authority and decision making to anyone else, especially to the first boy she meets.
What could Anna Carey have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
While Eve had to start out weak, it would help if she actually grew and learned as the story continued. Maybe this happens later in the series, but she is such a aimless character by the end of book one, I'm not all that interested in what happens to her next.
Do you think Eve needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I suppose it would be necessary to redeem Eve's character, if that is ultimately a goal.
Any additional comments?
The story moves along at a good clip, and the overall atmosphere created is engaging. There are several points where the story takes an interesting turn. I would have just preferred to follow any other character but Eve at each of those transitions.

Did she really need to be so dumb?
I really wish this would have been more enjoyable. I liked the idea of the story. It's basically a good strong story but the girl drove me crazy. I understand she didn't grow up knowing "caution" and she was extremely sheltered and lied to. BUT there's just some things that are common sense, or you fear for your life enough to not make a dumb decision. I feel like there could have been other ways to make drama and suspense without this girl, Eve, making such dumb decisions.
I may listen to the next book just to see what happens. By the end she is a much more likeable character and I'm interested to see if she continues to get a backbone and some sense.

Great performance Horrible ending
This was a great performance. I kept waiting for the book to the climax. The ending made me angry because it left the book unfinished! I know it is a first book in a series but you still need to the up each book!

Missing the ending
This is a trilogy that ended without an ending. There should of been a 4th book to wrap everything up. What could have been a good series was disappointing!!! Would not recommend!!!

I just didn't care...
...about the characters, about their relationships, about anything.
I could blame the fact that I had just finished listening to Veronica Roth's Divergent, which is a hard act to follow. That's a book that gets it right, and by the end you can't wait to hear what comes next. I was completely invested in each character and believed that the romance at the heart of it was genuine and deep. In the case of Eve, I didn't buy it. And I can't see myself buying any more of the series when it comes out.
The problem, I believe, is that too much happens too quickly. The book is just six and a half hours long. I do like a book to get going quickly, but the first half hour of this book was ridiculously paced. If the author had taken a little more time to build things up, to give us layer after layer of rich detail, then the characters would have seemed more real and therefore their relationships more honest and ultimately, the stakes would be higher for the reader. I felt like the author was just following a blueprint for this sort of novel, but there was no heart at the centre of it. That's pretty bad for a book that is supposed to be about love.
Also, the narration didn't do much for me. It wasn't terrible, but some of the voices really grated on me.
