Publisher's summary

Now captain of her own pirate ship, Jules of Landfall faces ambushes by Mage assassins and threats from Mechanics who can’t decide whether to kill her or try to use her for their own ends. The Emperor has made her an offer he doesn’t think she can refuse, but Jules wants nothing to do with that gilded cage. Now, the Emperor’s forces are redoubling their efforts to capture her.

The free ships of the pirates have never gathered around any single leader, but when the Mechanics seek to limit the power of the Empire, Jules realizes it offers her a means to grow the strength of the free people escaping the Emperor’s grasp. Gaining access to the strange Mechanic weapons known as “revolvers”, she marshals her forces in an unprecedented attempt to capture an Imperial settlement.

Ultimately, Jules must play the three greatest powers in the world against each other, in a desperate gambit to survive.

love the direction this is going

watching Jules struggle with loss, the weight of the prophecy, making decisions she shouldn't have to is hard. really makes you realize how much she did pave the way for Mari in the future. the emotional struggle is real.

Better than the first book.

It's rare for me to find the second book in a series better than the first, but that was the case here. I enjoyed the story more than I expected too though I had a little trouble getting into the story. I may have waited to long after the first book though.

wow again

Ok. This is not my genre. Second book in and I am till very impressed.

The author continues to build an incredible world. Author is taking the time to share incredible small details like I am a witness to something fantastic. I love the small details that make the world believable.

The reader has continued to capture the epicness of this tale bringing to life the diverse cast of characters.

I am liking this team. I am heading into the next book now. Great job folks.

First time through, so-so, but…

I am a new to Jack Cambell’s writing, but have been a voracious reader. This book left me a little disappointed first time through. However upon my second time I caught many things that I had missed. Mr. Campbell is a masterful story teller and this book is no exception. I have always enjoyed epic tales and this one is truly one more installment in one of the greatest series of all times

Another good one

Not happy about the quasi cliffhanger, but once again thoroughly enjoyed this book. Plenty of tension with enough relaxing of same to maintain interest.

Great story. Love the series.

Jack Campbell does a great job and so does the narrator. it's quite the adventure story! A great sci-fi pirate novel.

what a girl

very action packed but turns Jewels into a very competitive person. she is kind, thoughtful and brave. As well as trustworthy, creative & slightly emotional as any girl should be. loved it.

Better than book 1

I made it through this book a lot faster than expected. It moves quickly through a complex story with many memorable parts. And the endless whining about fate from book 1 seems less… It’s not gone, but the long conversations that seemed to dominate every chapter have been reduced to occasional griping and a recognition that life must go on. Really looking forward to book 3, as there are so many ways this story can go

it's too bad

I really love the other series but this one . . . I'm not sure it was really written by Jack Campbell. I found myself turning on the radio to help me get through the book. it is better then the first book in this series but that isn't saying much. It's the first time I will not be finishing a Jack Campbell series
