Story
The enlightenment you seek in other religions has been present in Christianity from the beginning. Richard Rohr, a global leader in spiritual awakening, helps you recognize the forces (such as ego resistance and dual thinking) that separate you from your deeper self. Then, drawing from Gospels and the greatest Christian contemplatives, he shows you what it means to be spiritually awake. You will learn why your ego resists change and growth, what is useful about popular ideas such as the law of attraction, what Jesus, the first mythical leader in the West, can teach you.

Story
Franciscan priest Richard Rohr feels that there is no more challenging spiritual issue than the “problem of the self". Most of contemporary spiritual teaching, he believes, is still trying to inspire and fortify the private self, the autonomous "I". Even much church work is trying to evangelize and sacramentalize what many would call "the false self." Basic transformation is not expected, but merely a new set of beliefs and practices or loyal membership in a new group.

Our culture has done everything in its power, it seems, to move away from this ancient wisdom. Men are lured away to dominate through money, sex, power, consumerism—and never really become men.

A universal pattern can be found in all societies and in fact in all of creation. We see it in the seasons of the year; the stories of Scripture; the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus; the rise and fall of civilizations; and even in our own lives. In this new version of one of his earlier books, Father Richard Rohr illuminates the way understanding and embracing this pattern can give us hope in difficult times and the courage to push through messiness and even great chaos to find a new way of being in the world.

Story
Author David Brooks explores the four commitments that define a life of meaning and purpose: to a spouse and family, to a vocation, to a philosophy or faith, and to a community. Our personal fulfillment depends on how well we choose and execute these commitments. Brooks looks at a range of people who have lived joyous, committed lives, and who have embraced the necessity and beauty of dependence. He gathers their wisdom on how to choose a partner, how to pick a vocation, how to live out a philosophy, and how we can begin to integrate our commitments into one overriding purpose.

Story
In these daily reflections, Richard Rohr invites us to rediscover the spring hidden inside. He reminds us of our inherent belovedness and God’s indwelling presence. Remembering who we truly are is a gradual lifelong journey, but Fr. Richard offers insights to ease the process and lead us back to our Source. The meditations follow the arc of life, from innocence, through inevitable brokenness, to putting ourselves back together, through ripening into union - with self, God, the world, and others.

Publisher's summary
In the first half of life, we are naturally preoccupied with establishing ourselves; climbing, achieving, and performing. But as we grow older and encounter challenges and mistakes, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way. This message of falling down - that is in fact moving upward - is the most resisted and counterintuitive of messages in the world's religions.
Falling Upward offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how those who have fallen down are the only ones who understand "up". We grow spiritually more by doing it wrong than by doing it right, and the disappointments of life are actually stepping stones to the spiritual joys in the second half of life.

Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved of all saints. Both traditional and entirely revolutionary, he was a paradox. He was at once down-to-earth and reaching toward heaven, grounded in the rich history of the Church while moving toward a new understanding of the world beyond. Franciscan Father Richard Rohr helps us look beyond the birdbath image of the saint to remind us of the long tradition founded on Francis' revolutionary, radical, and life-changing embrace of the teachings of Jesus.

Story
In his best-selling book Falling Upward, Richard Rohr talked about ego (or the False Self) and how it gets in the way of spiritual maturity. But if there's a False Self, is there also a True Self? What is it? How is it found? This book likens True Self to a diamond, buried deep within us, formed under the intense pressure of our lives, that must be searched for, uncovered, separated from all the debris of ego that surrounds it. In a sense True Self must, like Jesus, be resurrected, and that process is not resuscitation but transformation.

You exist far beyond your prospective of yourself
Through Falling Upward Father Richard Rohr somehow spoke deeply into my longing heart and shone a small light on the path forward for me. After reading many other works on spiritual identity and non-dualistic thinking, as well as many more than a few returns to this work, I've come to find that the small flickering light I saw at first was only the promise of something beyond my closed eyes. It has taken many hardships, disappointments, and some invasive spiritual surgery, but I have finally begun to open my eyes. The world is still too bright for me to make out much clearly but the wonder of the colors a seeing shapes where there used to only be shadows has been a humbling and exhilarating experience. Father Rohr has reignited my oldest passion and introduced me to the world where my soul is finding satisfaction and submission to truly worthy authority. God bless you who read this. Please open this book and see the world beyond your eyes.

Wonderful, inspiring, deeply profound.
I've read the book and loved it, and wanted to let it all sink in a little more deeply so purchased this audiobook. I often found myself out for a 15 minute walk that became a 30 minute walk that became a 60 minute walk because I didn't want to stop listening. Deeply nourishing for all of us who continue to ask the big questions over and over, looking to both give more and get more out of the second half of life. This book will not disappoint; highly, highly recommended.

TRANSFORMATIONAL
Where does Falling Upward rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This has been the most enlightening book I've been introduced to in a decade. It is a must read for all of us who are on the spiritual path. The clarity of my own journey was plainly, simply and beautifully written in a way that will stay with me the rest of my days.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Falling Upward?
It was all full of 'memorable' moments as its resonance for the entirety of my life.
What does Richard Rohr bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I love Richard Rohr speeches. I was able to listen to the entire book in one sitting.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
