About this listen

Lee Child says she's "a genius".

P. D. James called her "the most remarkable" of today's suspense writers.

Stieg Larsson loved her work so much, he named her in his novels.

And now Sara Paretsky returns with the most extraordinary novel of her legendary career: Fallout.

Before there was Lisbeth Salander, before there was Stephanie Plum, there was V. I. Warshawski. To her parents she's Victoria Iphigenia. To her friends she's Vic. But to clients seeking her talents as a detective, she's V. I. And her new case will lead her from her native Chicago...and into Kansas, on the trail of a vanished film student and a faded Hollywood star.

Accompanied by her dog, V. I. tracks her quarry through a university town, across fields where missile silos once flourished - and into a past riven by long-simmering racial tensions, a past that holds the key to the crimes of the present. But as the mysteries stack up, so does the body count. And in this, her toughest case, not even V. I. is safe.

Exciting and provocative, fiercely intelligent and witty, Fallout is listening at its most enjoyable and powerful.

Just ok

The story did come together at the end but took way too long to get there. I’ve enjoyed other VI Warshawski stories much more than this one.

Excellent without violence or torture!

This superlative plot has no need to use space with useless torture scenes or graphic violence. The great skill and expertise of both writer and narrator created a very enjoyable listening experience. Thank-you!

Important to listen at 1.1 speed!

I was struggling to get through this book as it seemed to drag on and on. By accident, I increased the speed to 1.5 which was too fast. But now I had the idea to speed it up and found that 1.1 was perfect. This made me so happy as I was thinking I could not listen to any of the other books as they were all read by this narrator.

A mystery in a mystery

This story is well written. While I had issues with some of the twists; it was alternately fun, confusing, horrifying and always engaging. This was my first V I book and it’s not the last.

VI goes on a Road Trip to Kansas

This is a new episode (#18) in the Victoria Iphigenia Warshawski series. VI is hired to find August Verider who is accused of ransacking the gym he works. The trail leads to Lawrence, Kansas where events that took place at a 1983 demonstration have importance to her case. Vi has one of her dogs with her as her neighbor is on a trip. On the personal side, she receives a break-up e-mail from her boyfriend.

The book is well written. The plot is complex with many subplots. Paretsky has her famous amusing dialogue which Susan Ericksen does flawlessly. VI gets herself into some life threating situations which is normal for her. Paretsky provides a tour of Lawrence, Kansas as well as Chicago. I am looking forward to the next book.

I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. Susan Ericksen does an excellent job narrating the book. Ericksen has narrated the last few book so she is becoming VI in my mind. Not all narrators have been able to do the subtle amusing dialogue that is Paretsky’s trademark. Ericksen is an actress and award-winning audiobook narrator.

Very good

One of Sara's best VI novels. Although it was hard listening to at the beginning because I'm so used to hearing Susan Erickson narrate the Death books by JD Robb. And when she through in a police officer named Peabody I had to really concentrate on who the story was about. I loved it!

a morality tale for today.

I love V. I. but this book really should put the fear of God in all of us. This is fiction but not out of the realm of something that could happen. Think of Timothy McVay or whatever his name was and that kind of domestic terrorism. Not the Talaban or Isis, but good old American right wing extremists that feel so validated with Trump in the White House. I pray we'll survive the next four years.
