The author relates his tale through the filter of magical realism. He describes a young life lived among circumstances involving a wealthy family navigating life demands in mid-20th century Cuba, a country at civil war. At age 12, he was forced to emigrate to the United States the night power changed hands: January 1, 1959. The book is divided into two sections: Cuba (before 1/1/1959) and Exile (after 1/1/1959).
Major challenges induce him to turn into a superhero (Super-boy) who grows to become an adult (Superman) who overcomes some of his childhood weaknesses. The author, Dr. Orlando Garcia-Piedra, asks his family ghosts, Mom, Dad, his brother Humberto, and God, for help in writing his memoir. They accept and become his coauthors, leading most "conversations".
