About this listen

A half-century after its original publication, Edward Abbey's classic 1962 novel, Fire on the Mountain, still retains its beauty, power, and relevance. This extraordinary tale by the legendary icon of the environmentalism movement and author of The Monkey Wrench Gang proudly celebrates rugged American individualism, as it tells the story of one tough old loner's stand against the combined, well-armed forces of government that are determined to clear him from his land.

Ever impressed by Abbey

I read 4 of his more popular books last year, and got this because I was jonesing for more and I LOVE this narrator. I was a little hesitant because it was an earlier work and I though that maybe he hadn’t developed his voice yet. I was so wrong. It’s pure Abbey. I already thought he was brilliant. Now I KNOW he was brilliant, and stands with the best authors of the 20th century. I loved this book as much as any other.

Excellent Abbey

Capturing Abbey's themes of defiance, natural splendor, and commitment, this is a must read. It captures a proud American spirit and beautifully renders a countryside worth saving and freedoms worth preserving.

Excellent story and well-told!

Edward Abby is a much better writer than I expected. I could feel every sentiment, see every landscape, and smell every smell he described. It was a great story that kept one on the edge of their seat.

A Classic

Fire on the Mountain is a classic of western life in Texas. Like Steinbeck and McCarthy, Abbey paints a picture of a world that seems timeless and focuses on the strong willed people who populate it.

Danny Campbell's narration is spot on.

Cactus Ed strikes again

Excellent story. Excellent narration. Edward Abbie throughout. The desert is alive in this story. And the story is from an interesting perspective of past current events. A good read.

Not what I expected but good

I was expecting a wildland firefighting book, based on actual events. However this book also being based on actual events, was not about firefighting, was a good story. It was a happy mistake.

Tears of joy.

Excellent narration.

This wonderful story about the deep bond between a boy and his grandfather will have you laughing and crying tears of joy.

As always, Abbey has the ability to perfectly describe the natural world and portray the struggle to protect it in a way that is humanizing and admirable.

Great Abbey book.

This is a typical abbey book, which means it is great. Perfect characters and themes of preservation of the west.
