Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2014 - Jim Gaffigan's Dad Is Fat was the first purchase I ever made on Audible. Long before I started working here, I came to the site to download a few of his comedy sketches, having always appreciated his honest and self-deprecating brand of humor. Food: A Love Story, Gaffigan's second full-length book after his 2013 best seller, is full of the hilarious and relatable anecdotes that fans have come to expect. His love of food is perhaps unmatched, and his portly belly and extensive research whilst touring go a long way in adding credibility to his reviews and thoughts on our nation's best (and worst) dishes. I can’t wait to revisit Gaffigan's favorite meals with him as narrator. Katie, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Comedian Jim Gaffigan reveals his most intimate food memories, opinions, and fantasies that will keep you laughing all the way to the refrigerator.

“What are my qualifications to write this book? None really. So why should you read it? Here’s why: I’m a little fat. If a thin guy were to write about a love of food and eating I’d highly recommend that you do not read his book.”

Bacon. McDonalds. Cinnabon. Hot Pockets. Kale. Stand-up comedian and author Jim Gaffigan has made his career rhapsodizing over the most treasured dishes of the American diet (“choking on bacon is like getting murdered by your lover”) and decrying the worst offenders (“kale is the early morning of foods”).

Fans flocked to his New York Times best-selling book Dad is Fat to hear him riff on fatherhood but now, in his second book, he will give them what they really crave—hundreds of pages of his thoughts on all things culinary(ish). Insights such as: why he believes coconut water was invented to get people to stop drinking coconut water, why pretzel bread is #3 on his most important inventions of humankind (behind the wheel and the computer), and the answer to the age-old question “which animal is more delicious: the pig, the cow, or the bacon cheeseburger?”

Critic reviews

“A highly entertaining and opinionated rumination on food.”Esquire

“Hilarious.”Food & Wine

“Gaffigan is delightful company, and he has a gift for comedy that is both clever and friendly. This book is a great use of his talents, and thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish—as long as it doesn’t make you too hungry along the way.”Splitsider

Laugh out loud funny!

I am sure my neighbors wonder what is so funny about cleaning off my deck. This book made me laugh so loud and long I would have to stop it for a while to catch my breath just sit down. I will listen to it again because I missed so much of it by laughing so loud I couldn’t hear parts.

Laughed out loud

Love when the author does the reading and only Jim Gaffigan could’ve read this book and made it funny. If you’ve seen his stand up, you’ll recognize a lot of it already but you can hear his jokes over and over and still laugh.

Right On Point

Funniest book I've ever listened to. Gaffigan must of covered everything there is, about food. Every mini chapter made me laugh. Shellfish are bugs, we're eating bugs!

Will Make You Laugh

Jim’s wit and delivery will give you plenty of laughs throughout the book. It was a pleasure to read it - you also get a bit of a glimpse of what kinds of food are popular across the country so that’s a bonus!

Smile on your face & inspiration in your belly

Jim's signature delivery of these delicious words and jokes gives you a break in the humdrum life
we all go through for a little giggle, a little inspiration & a little reassurance that eating that cheeseburger yesterday was totally cool.

Food, Comedy By Jim Gaffigan

whenever a comedian I like writes a book, I particularly enjoy the audiobook when ready by the comedian. instead of me imagining Gaffigan's inflections and tone when I read "hot-pockets" I can hear him insert some of his stand-up genius into the production of the book. Well worth the money and time spent.
