Resumen del Editor

In 1937, Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from "the good fight", For Whom the Bell Tolls.

The story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain, it tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. In his portrayal of Jordan's love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of El Sordo's last stand, in his brilliant travesty of La Pasionaria and his unwillingness to believe in blind faith, Hemingway surpasses his achievement in The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms to create a work at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving, and wise.

"If the function of a writer is to reveal reality," Maxwell Perkins wrote Hemingway after reading the manuscript, "no one ever so completely performed it." Greater in power, broader in scope, and more intensely emotional than any of the author's previous works, it stands as one of the best war novels of all time.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"This is the best book Ernest Hemingway has written, the fullest, the deepest, the truest. It will, I think, be one of the major novels in American literature." (The New York Times Book Review)

Best in a while

One of the best books I have lessened to in a while. Enjoyed Hemingway's style and the narrator was excellent.

Wonderful narrator!

This is one of my favorite books, so I was a little skeptical as to whether I'd enjoy the audiobook version. It's terrific! The narrator nails the different voices of the characters without it being too distracting. Just enough to add to the atmosphere of the book. It's been a very immersive and enjoyable experience. Highly recommend it!

Never ages

I read this book when I was a young teenager in Colombia in the fifties. Read it in Spanish as I did not speak English then. Now 78 years old as a retired physician still love this book enormously. Funny coincidence here: just happened to watch MIDNIGHT IN PARIS directed by Woody Allen. So much fun to meet Hemingway and his friends in the movie.
This being a classic does not require a serious review but a fun anecdote.

Worth

The book may start slow with a narrative that seemed at times plain…..just wait. Please give this book a chance, by the end you’ll be hearing a loud ringing noise !!

Perfectly narrated

I just want to highlight how good the narration is in this one. It's spoken clearly and can be understood well even in louder environments. Each character has a unique voice that fits them perfectly and does not seem forced from the narrator.

A great introduction to Hemingway

My first Hemingway. Listened on 1.6x speed.

I knew little of what happened in Spain during WWII. This was an insight that helped fill in some gaps in my knowledge. The story is simple but densely packed with strong character development and a detailed history that doesn’t overwhelm you. Hemingway expertly fills in enough background of all the character’s history so that you’re not left with any questions. Why is an American fighting in the Spanish civil war? How has he gone from a language teacher to such an experienced and disciplined sapper?

I enjoyed Hemingway’s style of writing, even though it was a little bit overdone sometimes like the now, now, now, part - 127 different ways to count now. Probably half that would have sufficed.

As one can expect from the title and from the introduction with John Donne’s poem, the ending is a thriller. I was left with my heart racing and I could hardly believe I’d reached the end.

Worth it

My first Hemingway novel. Loved it. Glad I saw the other reviews about his use of "obscenity" actually being apart of the book and it not being censored. Narrator was very good.
